VUV and mid‐UV photoabsorption cross sections of thin films of glycine and alanine: Application to their photochemistry in the solar system

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Thin solid films of pure glycine or alanine (thicknesses ranging from 10 to 700 nm) were prepared on MgF2 windows using a vacuum sublimation/recondensation method. VUV‐UV spectroscopy of these films enabled us to characterize new absorption cross sections for glycine and alanine for VUV‐UV radiations between 120 and 300 nm.

Biological enhancement of cloud droplet concentrations observed off East Antarctica

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
The impact that biogenic emissions have on aerosol-cloud interactions across the Southern Ocean is poorly quantified. Here we use satellite and ship observations during austral summer to study these interactions.

Advanced imaging and multi‐omics to characterize cardiomyocyte ageing and its electrocardiographic imprint in PKP2 arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend We used a murine model of cardiomyocyte‐specific conditional knockout of plakophilin 2 (PKP2cKO, middle panel). Using advanced imaging technology, we unveiled distinct hallmarks of premature ageing in PKP2cKO cardiomyocytes, including DNA damage and loss of repressed heterochromatin at the nuclear periphery, and mitochondrial ...

17O Quadrupole Coupling Constants in Water

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Chemistry, Volume 64, Issue 11, Page 907-916, November 2026.
In water clusters, first‐nearest‐neighbor interactions (1A and 1D) provide the largest contribution and are well captured by an additive donor–acceptor scheme, with improved accuracy upon inclusion of hydrogen bond distance dependence. Second nearest neighbor (D and A*) effects introduce smaller but systematic negative corrections, restoring near ...

Nitrogenated organic aerosols as cloud condensation nuclei

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2005
One important role of anthropogenic aerosol particles is their influence on climate by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. However, these particles are diverse in composition and mixing state, and our knowledge of which particle types act as cloud condensation nuclei is incomplete.

Variation on Toxic and Inflammatory Potential of Coal Smoke of Different Sources From a Region With High Lung Cancer Risk

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, Volume 41, Issue 11, Page 1311-1322, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Excess lung cancer risk in Xuanwei and Fuyuan, China, has been attributed to household air pollution from use of a locally sourced smoky (bituminous) coal. However, the carcinogenic mechanisms remain unclear. Given the important role of inflammation in lung cancer development, this study compared the proinflammatory potentials of the ...

Bacteria as Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) in the Atmosphere [PDF]

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2019
Bacteria activation and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) formation have been studied in the atmosphere using the classical theory of heterogeneous nucleation. Simulations were performed for the binary system of sulfuric acid/water using laboratory-determined contact angles.

Stratospheric Aerosol From Above: Laser‐Ablation Mass Spectrometer Samples Polar Vortex Air for the First Time

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract The JGR paper by Lawler et al. (2025, https://doi.org/10.1029/2025jd043530) marks a significant and historic first, the PALMS single‐particle chemical analysis sampling deep stratospheric Arctic vortex air for the first time. The analysis finds ∼90% of sulfate aerosol particles in the deepest stratosphere air (100–130 ppb N2O) are meteoric ...

Enhancement of the Nighttime Ocean Cool Skin Effect by Natural Surfactants

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract The ocean interface brightness temperature is sensitive to the biologic activity reflected by the chlorophyll‐a concentration (Chla) in the upper layers of the oceans. This is shown using sea surface skin temperatures Tskin retrieved from spectra recorded by the Infrared Atmospheric Sounder Interferometer and collocated measurements of bulk ...

Summertime Primary and Secondary Contributions to Southern Ocean Cloud Condensation Nuclei

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Atmospheric aerosols in clean remote oceanic regions contribute significantly to the global albedo through the formation of haze and cloud layers; however, the relative importance of ‘primary’ wind-produced sea-spray over secondary (gas-to-particle ...
