A Novel Type of Fluorescent Chlorophyll Catabolites Hypermodified by Lipophilic Chloroplast Membrane Components

open access: yesHelvetica Chimica Acta, Volume 109, Issue 5, May 2026.
Breakdown of chlorophyll (Chl) is a fundamental biological phenomenon. In de‐greening banana leaves, Chl is transformed into colorless “fluorescent” Chl‐catabolites (FCCs) that cause the leaves to luminesce blue. Hypothesis‐driven search for apolar banana‐FCCs, and structure elucidation, have revealed a striking first link between lipid metabolism and ...

Naturally occurring cobalamin (B12) analogs can function as cofactors for human methylmalonyl-CoA mutase

open access: yes
Cobalamin, commonly known as vitamin B12, is an essential micronutrient for humans because of its role as an enzyme cofactor. Cobalamin is one of over a dozen structurally related compounds - cobamides - that are found in certain foods and are produced ...

Coacervate Formation Behavior and Lubrication Properties of a Hair Shampoo Formulated With Amino Acid Surfactants and Cationized Cellulose

open access: yesJournal of Surfactants and Detergents, Volume 29, Issue 1, Page 127-135, January 2026.
Coacervate formation behavior of sodium lauroyl methylaminopropionate in a hair shampoo formulation. ABSTRACT Coacervates are ion complexes that enhance the lubrication of hair surfaces during hair washing. In this study, hair shampoos containing typical amino acid surfactants, including sodium lauroyl methylaminopropionate, were prepared to ...

Supplementing lactating dairy cows with a vitamin B12 precursor, 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole, increases the apparent ruminal synthesis of vitamin B12

open access: yesAnimal, 2015
Cobalamin (CBL), the biologically active form of vitamin B12, and its analogs, are produced by bacteria only if cobalt supply is adequate. The analogs differ generally by the nucleotide moiety of the molecule.

B12‐Cofactor Inactivation by Cobalt to Rhodium Mutation in Methylrhodibalamin: An Antivitamin B12 and Antibiotic

open access: yesChemistryEurope, Volume 3, Issue 6, November 11, 2025.
Replacement of cobalt in the organometallic B12‐cofactor methylcobalamin (MeCbl) by rhodium furnishes a structural mimic with a significantly stronger metal–carbon bond. This synthetically challenging formal metal‐mutation converts the naturally optimized biological methyl‐transfer catalyst MeCbl into a designed antivitamin B12, an inactivated B12 ...

Genetic and Biochemical Origins of Diversity in Cobamides: Nature's Most Beautiful Cofactors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The cobamide class of small molecules includes the essential micronutrient cobalamin (Vitamin B12). Cobamides catalyze a variety of reactions involving one-carbon transfers and radical mediated molecular rearrangements. These reactions are vital parts of

Aerobic adaptation and metabolic dynamics of Propionibacterium freudenreichii DSM 20271: insights from comparative transcriptomics and surfaceome analysis

open access: yesmSystems
Propionibacterium freudenreichii (PFR) DSM 20271T is a bacterium known for its ability to thrive in diverse environments and to produce vitamin B12. Despite its anaerobic preference, recent studies have elucidated its ability to prosper in the presence ...

Microbial Conversion of Glycerol Into 1,3‐Propanediol by Fermentation: Review of Fundamentals and Operational Strategies

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 18, Issue 11, November 2025.
This review highlights recent advances in microbial fermentation strategies for converting glycerol, a biodiesel by‐product, into 1,3‐propanediol. It discusses metabolic pathways, microbial inocula and key operational parameters to optimise production, supporting sustainable chemical synthesis aligned with circular economy principles. ABSTRACT Over the

Emission‐based sensing of cobalt (II) and vitamin B12 via a bis‐indole derivative

open access: yesLuminescence, Volume 39, Issue 8, August 2024.
In this study, a newly synthesized bis‐indole derivative has been successfully used in the analysis of both ionic cobalt and vitamin B12. The fluorescent bis‐indole ligand surrounds cobalt ions and acts similarly to the corrin ring in the structure of vitamin B12 in nature.

Chemically similar yet functionally distinct: Selectivity of methylmalonyl-CoA mutase among naturally diverse cobamide cofactors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Vitamin B12 is predominantly associated with human health, and many people are surprised to learn that B12 is produced by bacteria. Like humans, bacteria have metabolic enzymes that require B12 as a cofactor.
