Attentional Bias During a Novel Alcohol Cue Virtual Reality Paradigm

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, Volume 50, Issue 8, August 2026.
Assessing attentional bias toward alcohol cues can be improved through utilization of more immersive stimuli, such as virtual reality. Here, severity of alcohol use was associated with greater alcohol‐related attentional bias, representing opportunity for further research on virtual reality‐based approaches.

Altered Functional Connectivity in the Reward Circuit in Betel Quid‐Dependent Chewers

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 31, Issue 8, August 2026.
Resting‐state fMRI identified abnormal functional connectivity within the reward circuit in individuals with betel quid dependence, involving the ventral striatum, prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex and thalamus. Reduced connectivity between the thalamus and posterior cingulate cortex was related to dependence severity and BQ dosage.

Healthcare utilization and mortality after overdose prevention site closure: A linked cohort analysis using segmented difference‐in‐differences time series

open access: yesAddiction, Volume 121, Issue 8, Page 2083-2090, August 2026.
Abstract Background and aims Evidence regarding the impacts of supervised drug consumption services (SDC) remains mixed, and few evaluations have used individual‐level, linkable health data to examine service withdrawal. In September 2024, the Red Deer overdose prevention site (OPS) in Alberta, Canada, was scheduled for closure, with operations ceasing

The association between sleep disturbance and stimulant use: A cross‐lagged examination

open access: yesAddiction, Volume 121, Issue 8, Page 2116-2126, August 2026.
Abstract Background and aims Sleep disruptions increase the risk of substance misuse. Substance use—especially stimulants—can increase acute and chronic sleep dysfunction. This study aimed to estimate the associations between sleep disturbance and stimulant use over time among participants with stimulant use disorder (StUD).

Cultura caballista

open access: yesAmerican Ethnologist, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 296-309, August 2026.
Abstract The world of Colombian gaited horses, or cultura caballista (horse‐riding culture), is often linked with uribismo, the right‐wing identity associated with former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez. Ethnographic fieldwork in conflict‐torn Antioquia reveals how horse‐human practices of training, breeding, and competition cultivate orientations toward ...
