Abstract Codeine (methylmorphine) is a naturally occurring derivative of an opium alkaloid. Along with morphine and thebaine, it is a true ‘opiate’, i.e. a natural product and not a synthetic derivative of opium as are many of the ‘opioids’ used in every-day practice.
