Early detection and classification of live bacteria using time-lapse coherent imaging and deep learning [PDF]

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications, 2020
Early identification of pathogenic bacteria in food, water, and bodily fluids is very important and yet challenging, owing to sample complexities and large sample volumes that need to be rapidly screened.

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

On the Average Achievable Rate of QPSK and DQPSK OFDM Over Rapidly Fading Channels

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
Motivated by recent experimental observations, where differentially coherent detection outperforms coherent detection on certain underwater acoustic channels, we revisit the performance of these two methods with respect to the achievable rate in ...

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Simple Noise Mitigation Scheme for Coherent Optical DMT Signal Transmission System

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a noise mitigation scheme for coherent optical discrete multitone (DMT) signal transmission system. The proposed scheme can mitigate the laser phase noise and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) simultaneously ...

Pulse-compression ghost imaging lidar via coherent detection. [PDF]

open access: yesOptics Express, 2016
Ghost imaging (GI) lidar, as a novel remote sensing technique, has been receiving increasing interest in recent years. By combining pulse-compression technique and coherent detection with GI, we propose a new lidar system called pulse-compression GI ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

On the Advantage of Coherent LoRa Detection in the Presence of Interference [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Internet of Things Journal, 2020
It has been shown that the coherent detection of long range (LoRa) signals only provides marginal gains of around 0.7 dB on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel.

Perspectives in educating molecular pathologists on liquid biopsy: Toward integrative, equitable, and decentralized precision oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Liquid biopsy enables minimally invasive, real‐time molecular profiling through analysis of circulating biomarkers in biological fluids. This Perspective highlights the importance of training pathologists through integrative educational programs, such as the European Masters in Molecular Pathology, to ensure effective and equitable implementation of ...
