Strain analysis of stator coil holders for permanent magnet spherical motors
An analytical model of air-gap flux density and the Lorenz force law were used to establish radial and tangential electro-magnetic force models in the spherical coordinate system for the stator coils. Then, a finite element model of the stator casing and

Magnifying image intensifier [PDF]
A magnetically focused image intensifier was improved to increase the usable range of magnification without degradation of image quality. The power requirements of the focusing coils are minimal.

Structural specificity in coiled-coil interactions [PDF]
Coiled coils have a rich history in the field of protein design and engineering. Novel structures, such as the first seven-helix coiled coil, continue to provide surprises and insights. Large-scale datasets quantifying the influence of systematic mutations on coiled-coil stability are a valuable new asset to the area.

Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Magnetic superlens-enhanced inductive coupling for wireless power transfer
We investigate numerically the use of a negative-permeability "perfect lens" for enhancing wireless power transfer between two current carrying coils. The negative permeability slab serves to focus the flux generated in the source coil to the receiver ...

Structural determinants of coiled coil mechanics
In shear geometry, the sequence–structure–mechanics relationship of rationally designed coiled coil heterodimers is determined by the helix propensity of the individual helices and the packing density at the hydrophobic core.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Cyber–physical microgrid components fault prognosis using electromagnetic sensors
Higher operational requirements in cyber–physical microgrid system stress the electrical system and may push it to the edge of stability. Therefore, prognosis of the imminent failures is vital.

Phase separation in mixtures of colloids and long ideal polymer coils
Colloidal suspensions with free polymer coils which are larger than the colloidal particles are considered. The polymer-colloid interaction is modeled by an extension of the Asakura-Oosawa model. Phase separation occurs into dilute and dense fluid phases

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
