Transcription factors involved in cold response in plants.

open access: yes, 2010
Studies in Arabidopsis have shown cold stress tolerance can be enhanced by manipulation of the CBF/DREB and ICE transcription factor genes. To date, few studies have investigated CBF and ICE genes in crops species such as barley. Using a C-repeat element

MITF maintains genome stability in nonmelanocyte lineages

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
MITF is essential for melanocyte survival and acts as an oncogene in 10%–20% of melanomas. We show that MITF depletion causes genome instability in nonmelanocytic cells, leading to LATS2‐mediated P53 activation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. This study highlights the role of MITF as a genome maintenance factor beyond the melanocyte lineage. Created

COMFORT AND COLD [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1919
To the Editor: —It is a never-ceasing source of wonder that certain fundamental principles are so slowly grasped by the human mind. The article of Major Head (The Journal, May 3, 1919, p. 1268) is an admirable example of the misunderstanding of fresh air treatment of pneumonia, and Major Head is particularly to be commended for his frank statement of ...

Oncogenic DMTF1β promotes cancer cell motility by regulating autophagy through ULK1 stabilization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the current study, we demonstrate that the oncogene DMTF1β regulates ULK1 stability by reducing its proteasomal degradation in cancer cells. This stabilization enables ULK1 to induce autophagy, which in turn facilitates cancer cell migration. Consequently, reduced DMTF1β levels lead to decreased autophagy and impaired cancer cell migration.

Unveiling the complexity of the maize transcriptome by single-molecule long-read sequencing

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Zea mays is an important crop species and genetic model but uncertainties remain regarding the structure of the transcriptome. Here Wang et al. use single-molecule sequencing and size-fractionated libraries to identify novel transcripts and isoforms ...

Mitochondrial Complex I Inhibitors Expose a Vulnerability for Selective Killing of Pten-Null Cells

open access: yesCell Reports, 2018
Summary: A hallmark of advanced prostate cancer (PC) is the concomitant loss of PTEN and p53 function. To selectively eliminate such cells, we screened cytotoxic compounds on Pten−/−;Trp53−/− fibroblasts and their Pten-WT reference.

Cold Adaptations

open access: yesIndustrial Health, 2009
Nowdays, occupational and recreational activities in cold environments are common. Exposure to cold induces thermoregulatory responses like changes of behaviour and physiological adjustments to maintain thermal balance either by increasing metabolic heat production by shivering and/or by decreasing heat losses consecutive to peripheral cutaneous ...

Patient therapy outcome modeling in cancer organoids is improved by cancer‐associated fibroblasts and organoid assembly convolution

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Patient‐derived organoids (PDOs) from pancreatic, colorectal, and gastric cancers were used to evaluate standard and experimental therapies. Incorporating cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) into organoid cultures improved patient therapy outcome prediction.

Electrophysiological characterisation of neuronal components of cold sensitivity

open access: yes, 2015
Aberrant cold sensitivity is apparent in several neuropathies of peripheral and central origin, and is poorly treated by currently available drugs.
