Adaptation to extreme environments: A review of Antarctic fish physiology

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Having evolved in the chronically cold and thermally stable waters of the Southern Ocean (SO) for millions of years, Antarctic fish possess a suite of physiological specializations that enable them to survive at temperatures near the freezing point of seawater. Adaptations include the evolution of antifreeze proteins, modifications of membrane

Effects of Atmospheric CO2 Levels on the Susceptibility of Maize to Diverse Pathogens

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rising atmospheric CO2 has significant implications for crop productivity and food security. Based on studies in C3 plants, elevated CO2 (eCO2) can shape plant‐pathogen interactions, although the outcomes are often variable. The question of how eCO2 influences immunity and disease development in C4 plants, such as the globally important cereal

Sugars as Central Integrators of Plant Immunity and Stress Responses

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sugars are fundamental metabolites that sustain plant growth and development, but accumulating evidence demonstrates that they also function as regulatory hubs in plant defence. In this review, we synthesise current knowledge on how carbohydrate dynamics coordinate metabolism, signalling, and structural responses to shape plant resistance ...

Cold atmospheric pressure plasmas applications in dentistry

Plasma Processes and Polymers, 2022
AbstractCold atmospheric pressure plasmas (CAP) is widely used for various therapeutic applications in health care. With the enormous progress in the understanding of plasma physics and development of plasma devices, the application of CAP is greatly promoted in dentistry. The reactive chemical species and electromagnetic radiation generated by CAP can

Cold plasma brush generated at atmospheric pressure

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2007
A cold plasma brush is generated at atmospheric pressure with low power consumption in the level of several watts (as low as 4W) up to tens of watts (up to 45W). The plasma can be ignited and sustained in both continuous and pulsed modes with different plasma gases such as argon or helium, but argon was selected as a primary gas for use in this work ...

Atmospheric pressure cold plasma as an antifungal therapy

Applied Physics Letters, 2011
A microhollow cathode based, direct-current, atmospheric pressure, He/O2 (2%) cold plasma microjet was used to inactive antifungal resistants Candida albicans, Candida krusei, and Candida glabrata in air and in water. Effective inactivation (>90%) was achieved in 10 min in air and 1 min in water.

DC-excited cold atmospheric pressure plasmas

Czechoslovak Journal of Physics, 2006
In view of the increasingly wide range of applications, different approaches are nowadays being investigated to generate non-thermal plasmas operating at atmospheric pressure. In this paper the focus is on DC-excited atmospheric pressure discharges in air. The basic electrode configuration is that of a pin-to-plate corona.

Characteristics of RF Cold Plasma at Atmospheric Pressure

Plasma Science and Technology, 2007
The characteristics of a stable discharge at atmospheric pressure is investigated. The plasma source consisted of two closely spaced parallel-plated perforated electrodes, driven by a radio frequency power to generate a uniform cold plasma in Helium at atmospheric pressure. Both alpha and gamma modes were clearly observed.
