Macrozoobenthos in tributaries of the lower reaches of the ponoy river (Kola peninsula, Russia) in the habitats of young atlantic salmon (Salmo Salar L.) and brown trout (Salmo Trutta L.)

open access: yesTransactions of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2018
The study of the composition, abundance and biomass of zoobenthos was carried out in the mouth of the tributaries of the lower reaches of the Ponoy River to determine the state of the ecosystems of the river and assess the feeding resources for salmonid ...

On Shallow Cumulus Cold Pools

open access: yes, 2014
Observations of organized precipitating trade-wind cumuli show convective invigoration at their cold pool boundaries. Convection and cold pools are studied using nested-WRF simulations of a day from the Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean experiment.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Dynamic Ensemble Analysis of Frontal Placement Impacts in the Presence of Elevated Thunderstorms during PRECIP Events

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2018
The Program for Research on Elevated Convection with Intense Precipitation (PRECIP) field campaign sampled 10 cases of elevated convection during 2014 and 2015. These intense observing periods (IOP) mostly featured well-defined stationary or warm frontal

Electrochemical Evaluation of Compressed Selective Laser Melted AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg Alloys in Chloride Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The corrosion performance of AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg alloys produced through selective laser melting (SLM) was examined under compressive stress in a chloride environment. Electrochemical analyses, including open‐circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were complemented by scanning ...

Convectively Induced Secondary Circulations and Wind‐Driven Heat Fluxes in the Surface Energy Balance Over Land

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Increased resolution has enabled kilometer‐scale weather and climate models to partially resolve secondary circulations, including horizontal convective rolls (HCRs) and cold pool gust fronts.

Cold‐air pool evolution in a wide Pyrenean valley

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, 2018
This study on cold‐air pool formation in the wide Cerdanya Valley in the Pyrenees mountain range was conducted using available observational information from September 2010 to August 2014. Cold‐air pools occur during almost 60% of the nights, mainly during winter. Cold pools develop even under significant synoptic pressure gradients.

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

Surface Cold Pools in the Outer Rainbands of Tropical Storm Hanna (2008) Near Landfall

open access: yes, 2012
Surface mesonet observations were used to document the structure of prominent cold pools associated with two convective outer rainbands of Tropical Storm Hanna on 5 September 2008.
