The Structure of Coliphages [PDF]
SUMMARY: The detailed morphology of several new coliphages is compared with that of the more familiar types; the resulting information is considered for its taxonomic value. Some were examined at molecular level and new information on the tail structure of the ‘T even’ phages is described.

Bacteriophages as Fecal Pollution Indicators
Bacteriophages are promising tools for the detection of fecal pollution in different environments, and particularly for viral pathogen risk assessment.

Coliphages and Gastrointestinal Illness in Recreational Waters
Background: Coliphages have been proposed as indicators of fecal contamination in recreational waters because they better mimic the persistence of pathogenic viruses in the environment and wastewater treatment than fecal indicator bacteria.

Coliphages can indicate contamination of recreational waters and previous studies show that sunlight is important in altering densities of coliphages, other indicator microorganisms, and pathogens in aquatic environments.

Sewage coliphages studied by electron microscopy [PDF]
Sewage was enriched with 35 Escherichia coli strains, and sediments of enrichment cultures were studied in the electron microscope. They contained up to 10 varieties of morphologically different particles. T-even-type phages predominated in 14 samples.

Coliphages as Model Organisms in the Characterization and Management of Water Resources
Two groups of bacteriophages that infect Escherichia coli, somatic and F-specific coliphages, have been used in academia as both fecal and viral indicators for many years.

Bacteriophages are regarded as enteric viral indicators in faecally contaminated water systems and may indicate the presence of human viral pollution. They are relatively resistant to inactivation by natural and treatment processes.
