Molecular Changes in the Non-Inflamed Terminal Ileum of Patients with Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease confined to the colon. Although the etiopathogenesis remains unknown, small bowel dysfunctions like histological and permeability alterations have been described in ulcerative colitis. We evaluated the

Mucosal adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in the human colonic mucosa. A proof-of-concept study [PDF]
AIM To investigate the adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) in the colonic mucosa of healthy and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, both in vivo and ex vivo in an organ culture model.

TGF‐β has a complex role in cancer, exhibiting both tumor‐suppressive and tumor‐promoting properties. Using a series of differentiated tumoroids, derived from different stages and mutational background of colorectal cancer patients, we replicate this duality of TGF‐β in vitro. Notably, the atypical but highly aggressive KRASQ22K mutation rendered early‐

Loss of proton‐sensing GPR4 reduces tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer
G protein‐coupled receptor 4 (GPR4) is a pH‐sensing receptor activated by acidic pH. GPR4 expression is increased in patients with inflammatory bowel disease who are at high risk of developing colorectal cancer. In mouse models, loss of GPR4 attenuated tumor progression. This correlated with increased IL2 and natural killer cell activity.

A Parasite That Should not be Neglected in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis: Entamoeba histolytica
Objective: To determine the prevalence of amoebiasis, which has been neglected in recent years according to the World Health Organization, in ulcerative colitis patients and investigate the relationship between amoebiasis and ulcerative colitis. Methods:

Gut alterations in a chronic kidney disease rat model with diet‐induced vascular calcification
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients often suffer from intestinal and/or mineral and bone disorders. Using a rat model, we showed that uremic vascular calcification is associated with gut barrier alterations (decreased gut mucus production and Nlrp6 gene expression, increased gut inflammation), and plasma retention of gut‐origin uremic toxins (indoxyl

A Diagnostic Conundrum in a Newly Diagnosed Ulcerative Colitis Patient Who Presented with Pleuropericardial Effusion [PDF]
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting mainly the colon and presenting with diarrhea, bloody defecation andabdominal pain. Although cardiac and/or pulmonary involvement has been reported in patients with ulcerative colitis, it ...
