A collagenase that can digest both collagen fibers in the stroma and the native collagen molecule was found in rabbit corneal epithelium, using a tissue culture assay. Calf, chicken and fetal calf serum added to the tissue culture media inhibited the collagenase, while human and rabbit serum were not inhibitory.

Three mammalian collagenases (MMP-1, MMP-8, and MMP-13) belong to family of matrix metalloproteinases and are the principal secreted endopeptidases capable of cleaving collagenous extracellular matrix. In addition to fibrillar collagens, collagenases can cleave several other matrix and non-matrix proteins including growth factors, and this way regulate

Chick bone collagenase inhibitor and latency of collagenase
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1981Abstract Collagenase and collagenase inhibitor were isolated from the culture fluid of embryonic chick bone. The inhibitor, separated as a high molecular weight aggregate (160,000–200,000 daltons) during gel filtration in 1M NaCl, dissociated in 6M urea to species of approx 25,000 daltons.

Collagenase and Collagenase Inhibitors in Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluids
Chest, 1991Collagenase, collagenolytic activity and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases were evaluated in bronchoalveolar lavage from 25 patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis and four control subjects. Patients were followed between two and three years, after which they were classified as "healed," "improved," or "worsened." In control samples ...
