Multi-omics elucidation of yellow aril coloration in litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) cultivar ‘Jianjianghongnuo’: coordinated downregulation of flavonoid and carotenoid biosynthetic pathways drives pigment dynamics

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) arils are predominantly white or cream-colored, with yellow-pigmented cultivars being rare and poorly characterized.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Background matching, disruptive coloration, and differential use of microhabitats in two neotropical grasshoppers with sexual dichromatism

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Cryptic coloration is an adaptative defensive mechanism against predators. Color patterns can become cryptic through background coloration‐matching and disruptive coloration.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Coloration Mechanism in Proton-Intercalated Electrochromic Hydrated NiOy and Ni1-xVxOy Thin Films

open access: yes, 2009
Electrochromic (EC) films of nickel oxide, with and without vanadium,   were prepared by reactive dc magnetron sputtering. They were   characterized by electrochemical and optical measurements and studied   by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) using

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Conspicuousness and Crypsis in Woodpecker Coloration

open access: yes, 2021
The diverse field of animal coloration investigates the ways in which the colors and patterns of visual stimuli may be employed by organisms for survival in their natural habitats.

Dissecting Carotenoid from Structural Components of Carotenoid-Based Coloration: A Field Experiment with Great Tits (Parus major) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Carotenoid-based yellowish to red plumage colors are widespread visual signals used in sexual and social communication. To understand their ultimate signaling functions, it is important to identify the proximate mechanism promoting variation in ...
