Oral antibiotic prophylaxis induces changes in the microbiology of surgical site infection after colorectal surgery. A matched comparative study [PDF]

open access: yes
Aim: Oral antibiotic prophylaxis (OAP) lowers rates of surgical site infection (SSI) and may aid anastomotic healing in colorectal surgery. The aim of this study was to analyse the understudied impact of OAP on SSI microbiology after colorectal surgery ...

Evaluation of the accuracy of serum MMP-9 as a test for colorectal cancer in a primary care population [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Background Bowel cancer is common and is a major cause of death. Meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials estimates that screening for colorectal cancer using faecal occult blood (FOB) test reduces mortality from colorectal cancer by 16%.

Impact and evolution of minimal invasive surgery in a centralized colorectal service: trends, safety and oncological outcomes across 15 years

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgical Oncology
Aim Specialization with subsequent evolving minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been increasingly adopted in colorectal cancer care. This study aims to evaluate the impact of centralization and team specialization on oncologic quality and patient safety

Hybrid Continuum Robot Designs and Architectures for Healthcare Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Hybrid continuum robots represent an emerging class of flexible manipulators that blend materials, structures, and actuation concepts from the established fields of soft and continuum robotics. This review introduces an accessible framework to distinguish key hybridization approaches, surveys current designs aimed at complex clinical applications, and ...

Establishment and validation of a novel nomogram incorporating clinicopathological parameters into the TNM staging system to predict prognosis for stage II colorectal cancer

open access: yesCancer Cell International, 2020
Background Survival outcomes are significantly different in stage II colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with diverse clinicopathological features. The objective of this study is to establish a credible prognostic nomogram incorporating easily obtained ...

Cross‐Scale Hierarchical Targeted Delivery System Based on Small‐Scale Magnetic Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article reviews a cross‐scale hierarchical targeted delivery system that integrates magnetic continuum robots and magnetic microrobots. By combining rapid long‐range navigation with precise microscale targeting, the system overcomes key limitations of single‐scale approaches.

Colorectal cancer: a comparative study of models of health care delivery in two adjacent trusts in South Wales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Introduction Survival in colorectal cancer patients is dependant on the stage of the cancer at diagnosis. Referral via an appropriate pathway to a specialist service is vital to the early detection of colorectal cancer but there is neither a standard ...

Stromal‐Derived IL‐8 Promotes M2 Macrophage Polarization via the RhoA/MRTF‐A/SRF Transcriptional Axis to Impair CD8+ T Cell Cytotoxicity in Lung Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In the recondite pulmonary neoplastic milieu, DESMIN+ cancer‐associated fibroblasts function as the paramount stromal source of IL‐8, precipitating a deleterious immunological metamorphosis by engaging CXCR2 receptors on the myeloid lineage. This paracrine stimulus triggers a mechanotransduction cascade characterized by RhoA‐dependent actin ...

PRMT1‐Mediated LDHA Methylation Drives STAT3 Lactylation to Orchestrate Intestinal Inflammation and Tumorigenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies an immunometabolic axis wherein SAM‐driven PRMT1 methylates LDHA, enhancing its activity. The resultant lactate induces STAT3 K709 lactylation, which stabilizes an active conformation to promote STAT3 phosphorylation and IL‐10 expression.

Post-surgical morbidity in early versus late closure of defunctioning ileostomy after rectal cancer surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology
Background A defunctioning ileostomy is frequently created to avert the implications of a colo-rectal anastomotic dehiscence in rectal cancer surgery. The timing of closure of the ileostomy remains debatable as it is believed that early closure (EC) may ...
