Amazonian drought of 2023: Environmental conditions relevant to fishes
Abstract This paper provides a platform for the following studies within this Special Issue. ‘Ecophysiology of fishes in the two great tributaries of the Amazon in the Anthropocene’. It documents the water quality conditions and accompanying zooplankton community structure and biomass relative to fish health in the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões during the

Effects of afferent input on the breathing pattern continuum in the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) [PDF]
This study used a decerebrate and artificially-ventilated preparation to examine the roles of various afferent inputs in breathing pattern formation in the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). Three general breathing patterns were observed: (1) regular breathing; (2) frequency cycling and (3) episodic breathing.

Rivers across the Amazon Basin are increasingly threatened by climate change and dam construction, which restrict fish movements. We combined climate projections with river‐network connectivity analyses to identify where suitable habitats for frugivorous and socioeconomically important fish are likely to persist and where access may be lost due to ...

Stress Nutrition in Aquatic Animals: From Definition to Practice
ABSTRACT Aquaculture faces numerous challenges, with stress being one of the major issues that lead to growth loss, metabolic disorders, weakened immunity, redox imbalance, and organ damage in aquatic animals. Nutritional intervention is one of the effective strategies to address these problems. Traditional research has primarily focused on the impacts

Monoterpenes: Functional Additives for Reducing Antibiotics in Aquaculture
ABSTRACT Aquaculture is a rapidly growing industry that supplies fish for global consumption. However, the intensive production practices have resulted in disease outbreaks, largely driven by the misuse of antibiotics. Natural alternatives, such as monoterpenes, which are biocompounds derived from essential oils obtained from plants like thyme and ...
