A Hybrid Technique Using Combinatorial Cyclic Difference Sets and Binomial Amplitude Tapering for Linear Sparse Array Antenna Design

open access: yesAdvanced Electromagnetics, 2016
Reducing system complexity and cost in synthesizing a sparse array antenna design is a challenging task for practical communication systems, such as radar systems and space communication.

A rewriting grammar for heat exchanger network structure evolution with stream splitting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The design of cost optimal heat exchanger networks is a difficult optimisation problem due both to the nonlinear models required and also the combinatorial size of the search space.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Quick design of feasible tensor networks for constrained combinatorial optimization [PDF]

open access: yesQuantum
Quantum computers are expected to enable fast solving of large-scale combinatorial optimization problems. However, their limitations in fidelity and the number of qubits prevent them from handling real-world problems.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Multiplex dispensation order generation for pyrosequencing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This paper introduces the multiplex dispensation order generation problem, a real-life combinatorial problem that arises in the context of analyzing large numbers of short to medium length DNA sequences.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
