Activity of 50 Long-Period Comets Beyond 5.2 AU [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Remote investigations of the ancient solar system matter has been traditionally carried out through the observations of long-period (LP) comets that are less affected by solar irradiation than the short-period counterparts orbiting much closer to the Sun. Here we summarize the results of our decade-long survey of the distant activity of LP comets.

Combination of lung ultrasound (a comet-tail sign) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide in differentiating acute heart failure from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma as cause of acute dyspnea in prehospital emergency setting

open access: yesCritical Care, 2011
IntroductionWe studied the diagnostic accuracy of bedside lung ultrasound (the presence of a comet-tail sign), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and clinical assessment (according to the modified Boston criteria) in differentiating ...

Standardizing electrophoresis conditions: how to eliminate a major source of error in the comet assay.

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2015
In the alkaline comet assay, cells are embedded in agarose, lysed, and then subjected to further processing including electrophoresis at high pH (>13). We observed very large variations of mean comet tail lengths of cell samples from the same population ...

Targeting Replication Fork Processing Synergizes with PARP Inhibition to Potentiate Lethality in Homologous Recombination Proficient Ovarian Cancers

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that the resveratrol analogue, trans‐4,4′‐dihydroxystilbene (DHS), exhibits synergistic anti‐tumor activity with the PARP inhibitor talazoparib, inducing significant ovarian cancer cell death. The synergistic effect of this combination arises from the concurrent downregulation of homologous recombination factors and the ...

Neutral sodium from comet Hale-Bopp: a third type of tail [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We report on the discovery and analysis of a striking neutral sodium gas tail associated with comet C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp. Sodium D-line emission has been observed at heliocentric distance r<1.4 AU in some long-period comets and the presence of neutral sodium in the tailward direction of a few bright comets has been noted, but the extent, and in ...

Addressing employment barriers for humanitarian migrants: Perspectives from settlement services

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Social Issues, EarlyView.
Abstract This research seeks to understand the challenges faced by settlement service providers (SSPs) in assisting humanitarian migrants to secure appropriate employment. In‐depth interviews with 26 SSPs identified that current impediments to facilitating humanitarian migrants' employment related to employment support programmes; settlement service ...

Soliton model of formation of spherical clouds in the cometary plasma tail

open access: yesВісник Астрономічної школи, 2013
On the basis of photographic images of comet Halley, obtained by K.I.Churyumov in 1985–1986, soliton model of spherical and nonregular condensations in cometary plasma tails, is proposed. Parameters of the soliton (spherical cloud), which observed in the

A model of Mira's cometary head/tail entering the Local Bubble

open access: yes, 2010
We model the cometary structure around Mira as the interaction of an AGB wind from Mira A, and a streaming environment. Our simulations introduce the following new element: we assume that after 200 kyr of evolution in a dense environment Mira entered the

The Slow‐Rotating Nucleus of Comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy)

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The close approach of comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy) allowed us to conduct an in‐depth study of the morphology of the inner coma. From the measurement of the dust emission structures expanding near the cometary nucleus in November–December 2013, we derived a slow rotation period of 47.8±1.2$$ 47.8\pm 1.2 $$ h.
