Dynamics of the Apple Fruit Microbiome after Harvest and Implications for Fruit Quality

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
The contribution of the apple microbiome to the production chain of apple was so far largely unknown. Here, we describe the apple fruit microbiome and influences on its composition by parameters such as storage season, storage duration, storage ...

Development of a digital training for social and emotional competences for medical assistants in vocational education and training in Germany

open access: yesEmpirical Research in Vocational Education and Training, 2023
This paper describes a digital training for social and emotional competences for prospective medical assistants (MAs) in Germany. Social and emotional competences (SEC) are necessary for the collaboration with colleagues as well as for the contact with ...

Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

Dissociating language and thought in large language models [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Large Language Models (LLMs) have come closest among all models to date to mastering human language, yet opinions about their linguistic and cognitive capabilities remain split. Here, we evaluate LLMs using a distinction between formal linguistic competence -- knowledge of linguistic rules and patterns -- and functional linguistic competence ...

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

DNA methylation changes in endometrium and correlation with gene expression during the transition from pre-receptive to receptive phase

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The inner uterine lining (endometrium) is a unique tissue going through remarkable changes each menstrual cycle. Endometrium has its characteristic DNA methylation profile, although not much is known about the endometrial methylome changes throughout the

Deep neural network based data-driven virtual sensor in vehicle semi-active suspension real-time control

open access: yesTransport, 2022
This research presents a data-driven Neural Network (NN)-based Virtual Sensor (VS) that estimates vehicles’ Unsprung Mass (UM) vertical velocity in real-time. UM vertical velocity is an input parameter used to control a vehicle’s semi-active suspension.

Coherence as Competence [PDF]

open access: yesEpisteme, 2021
AbstractBeingincoherentis often viewed as a paradigm kind of irrationality. Numerous authors attempt to explain the distinct-seeming failure of incoherence by positing a set of requirements of structural rationality. I argue that the notion of coherence that structural requirements are meant to capture is very slippery, and that intuitive judgments ...
