Complementary two-dimensional digital filters
Proceedings of the IEEE, 1986The concept of complementary one-dimensional digital filters is extended here to the two-dimensional case. An application of the complementary two-dimensional filters is described and illustrated with the aid of an example.

Complementary IIR digital filter banks

The pair is required to have complementary square magnitude characteristics with respect to a constant and transfer functions complementary with respect to an allpass function.

Generalized doubly complementary IIR digital filters
Signal Processing, 1992The authors examine the properties of weighted complementary IIR filters. Either real or complex allpass subfilters are utilized. The classical odd-order lowpass designs can be realized as a parallel connection of two real or complex conjugate allpass filters. Also, a complementary filter pair can be implemented at the cost of a single filter.

Broadband beamforming with power complementary filters
IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2002This paper addresses the design of broadband finite impulse response (FIR) beamformers with a power complementarity property. The power complementarity requirement is needed to preserve the whiteness of the channel noise at the beamformer output, which allows the application of optimum trellis-based equalizers to the output signal.

Complementary filter banks for image compression
Proceedings X Brazilian Symposium on Computer Graphics and Image Processing, 2002In this paper we present a nonseparable complementary filter (CF) bank for image compression. We base our design of the filter bank on the two-dimensional (2D) multirate processing and on properties of complementary filters. Perfect reconstruction is guaranteed when the CF bank is implemented with quincunx sampling and filtering, but not otherwise.

Discrete time-varying attitude complementary filter
2009 American Control Conference, 2009This paper presents the development of an attitude complementary filter for an Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS). Using strapdown inertial measurements and vector observations, the proposed complementary filter provides attitude estimates in Euler angles representation, while compensating for rate gyro bias.

A class of complementary IIR filters

One of these filters can be realized as a tapped cascaded interconnection of identical allpass subfilters. The complementary filter is then obtained automatically by adding some extra allpass subfilters and a subtractor.
