Development status of indigenous computational fluid dynamics software for arbitrary complex geometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
[Abstract]: This paper describes the development status of an indigenous Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software (FLOWSIM) capable of handling complex geometry.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Characteristics and development of European cyclones with tropical origin in reanalysis data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Major storm systems over Europe frequently have a tropical origin. This paper analyses the character- istics and dynamics of such cyclones in the observational record, using MERRA reanalysis data for the period 1979- 2013.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Ascertaining when a basin is Wada: the merging method

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Trying to imagine three regions separated by a unique boundary seems a difficult task. However, this is exactly what happens in many dynamical systems showing Wada basins.

Energy-Efficient Distillation Processes by Additional Heat Transfer Derived From the FluxMax Approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research, 2020
Distillation processes are an essential component of any chemical plant for the separation and purification of condensable mixtures. However, distillation columns account for the largest contribution to the total energy consumption of chemical processes ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Complex Dynamics in a Bertrand Duopoly Game with Heterogeneous Players [PDF]

open access: yes
A heterogeneous Bertrand duopoly game with bounded rational and adaptive players manufacturing differentiated products is subject of investigation. The main goal is to demonstrate that participation of one bounded rational player in the game suffices to ...
