Sky-canopy border length, exposure and thresholding influence accuracy of hemispherical photography for complex plant canopies

open access: yesBotanical Studies, 2018
Background Hemispherical photography (HP) is a popular method to estimate canopy structure and understorey light environment, which analyses photographs acquired with wide view-angle lens (i.e. fisheye lens).

Thin Ohmic or superconducting strip with an applied ac electric current

open access: yes, 2006
The complex impedance, currents, and electric and magnetic fields are calculated as functions of resistivity and frequency or London depth for a long thin strip with applied ac current. Both Ohmic and superconducting strips are considered.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structure of full-length ERGIC-53 in complex with MCFD2 for cargo transport

open access: yesNature Communications
ERGIC-53 transports certain subsets of newly synthesized secretory proteins and membrane proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus. Despite numerous structural and functional studies since its identification, the overall architecture

Genome-wide macrosynteny among Fusarium species in the Gibberella fujikuroi complex revealed by amplified fragment length polymorphisms. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The Gibberella fujikuroi complex includes many Fusarium species that cause significant losses in yield and quality of agricultural and forestry crops. Due to their economic importance, whole-genome sequence information has rapidly become available for ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

The delta S (delta R)-2 question: The pulse-length dependence of signal power for Fresnel scatter [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
It is proposed that the enhanced echoes from the atmosphere observed with a vertically pointing radar are due to reflections from horizontally stratified layers.
