Paul Eelen: Reflections on Life and Work
This manuscript is part of a special issue to commemorate professor Paul Eelen, who passed away on August 21, 2016. Paul was a clinically oriented scientist, for whom learning principles (Pavlovian or operant) were more than salivary responses and lever ...

Conditioning an additive functional of a markov chain to stay nonnegative. II, Hitting a high level [PDF]
Let (X-t)(t >= 0) be a continuous-time irreducible Markov chain on a finite state space E, let v: E -> R \ {0}, and let (phi(t))(t >= 0) be defined by phi(t) = integral(0)(t) v(X-s) ds.

In lymphoid organs, antigen recognition and B cell receptor signaling rely on integrins and the cytoskeleton. Integrins act as mechanoreceptors, couple B cell receptor activation to cytoskeletal remodeling, and support immune synapse formation as well as antigen extraction.

Condition numbers and their condition numbers
AbstractVarious normwise relative condition numbers that measure the sensitivity of matrix inversion and the solution of linear systems are characterized. New results are derived for the cases where two common, noninduced matrix norms are used, and where different vector norms are used for the domain and range of the matrix.

Some preconditioners for systems of linear inequalities
We show that a combination of two simple preprocessing steps would generally improve the conditioning of a homogeneous system of linear inequalities.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

Stress is a strong modulator of memory function. However, memory is not a unitary process and stress seems to exert different effects depending on the memory type under study.

Interaction extracellular vesicles (iEVs) are hybrid vesicles formed through host‐pathogen communication. They facilitate immune evasion, transfer pathogens' molecules, increase host cell uptake, and enhance virulence. This Perspective article illustrates the multifunctional roles of iEVs and highlights their emerging relevance in infection dynamics ...

Decoding the dual role of autophagy in cancer through transcriptional and epigenetic regulation
Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation controls autophagy, which exerts context‐dependent effects on cancer: Autophagy suppresses tumorigenesis by maintaining cellular homeostasis or promotes tumor progression by supporting survival under stress. In this “In a Nutshell” article, we explore the intricate mechanisms of the dual function of autophagy ...
