SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, 1998 It is shown that the 2-norm condition number of a lower triangular matrix of dimension \(n\), whose entries come from an independent normal variable of mean 0 and variance 1, grows exponentially with \(n\). This is in striking contrast to the linear growth of the condition number of random dense matrices.
