Conformations of the pyranoid sugars. I. Classification of conformers

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Bureau of Standards Section A: Physics and Chemistry, 1960
An improved system is presented for indicating the principal conformations of pyranoid sugars and derivatives, by attaching two symbols to the systematic name. The first symbol shows the kind of pyranoid ring; for example, B = a boat, C = the chair, and S = a skew form.

Development of a methodology to describe udder conformation in sows

open access: yesAnimal, 2016
The aim of this study was to develop a methodology to measure sow udder conformation to use in studying the correlation between udder traits and piglet survival, health and performance.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Crystal structure of N-(propan-2-ylcarbamothioyl)benzamide

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section E: Crystallographic Communications, 2015
In the crystal structure of the title compound, C11H14N2OS, the six atoms of the central C2N2OS residue are coplanar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.002 Å), which facilitates the formation of an intramolecular N—H...O hydrogen bond, which closes an S(6) loop.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Structural analysis of the starfish SALMFamide neuropeptides S1 and S2: The N-terminal region of S2 facilitates self-association

open access: yes, 2014
The neuropeptides S1 (GFNSALMFamide) and S2 (SGPYSFNSGLTFamide), which share sequence similarity, were discovered in the starfish Asterias rubens and are prototypical members of the SALMFamide family of neuropeptides in echinoderms.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Conformation-dependent dynamics of macromolecular ions in the gas phase under an electrostatic field: A molecular dynamics simulation

open access: yes, 2019
Highly charged macromolecular ions exhibit various conformations in gas. Intramolecular charge-to-charge interaction induces a transformation from a globular structure into a stretched one.
