Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The crystal structure of 2-[(tert-butyldiphenylsilyl)oxy]-1,2-diphenylethan-1-one

open access: yesIUCrData, 2019
The title compound, C30H30O2Si, was synthesized and structurally characterized in order to determine the influence of the bulky silyl protecting group on the conformation of the benzoin moiety, with a view to directing the stereochemistry of the ...

Modulation of calmodulin lobes by different targets: an allosteric model with hemiconcerted conformational transitions

open access: yes, 2014
Calmodulin, the ubiquitous calcium-activated second messenger in eukaryotes, is an extremely versatile molecule involved in many biological processes: muscular contraction, synaptic plasticity, circadian rhythm, and cell cycle, among others.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Crystal structure of (Z)-ethyl 2-{5-[(2-benzylidene-3-oxo-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]thiazin-4-yl)methyl]-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl}acetate

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section E: Crystallographic Communications, 2015
The title compound, C22H20N4O3S, features two fused six-membered rings linked to a 1,2,3-triazole ring which is attached to an ethyl acetate group. The heterocycle in the benzothiazine residue has an envelope conformation with the S atom being the flap ...

Design Equation: A Novel Approach to Heteropolymer Design

open access: yes, 1998
A novel approach to heteropolymer design is proposed. It is based on the criterion by Kurosky and Deutsch, with which the probability of a target conformation in a conformation space is maximized at low but finite temperature.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Hydrolysis, polarity, and conformational impact of C-terminal partially fluorinated ethyl esters in peptide models

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2017
Fluorinated moieties are highly valuable to chemists due to the sensitive NMR detectability of the 19F nucleus. Fluorination of molecular scaffolds can also selectively influence a molecule’s polarity, conformational preferences and chemical reactivity ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
