Social Diversity, Globalization, and Sustainability in Community-Based Economies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Bioregional and “ecological economics” theory describes the growth of local economic linkages as vital to move post-industrial economies in the direction of sustainability.

Resource management and the effects of trade on vulnerable places and people : lessons from six case studies [PDF]

open access: yes
Lessons from six case studies illustrate the complex relationships between international trade, vulnerable ecologies and the poor. The studies, taken from Africa, Asia and Latin America and conducted by local researchers, are set in places where the poor

Data‐Driven Bulldozer Blade Control for Autonomous Terrain Leveling

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A simulation‐driven framework for autonomous bulldozer leveling is presented, combining high‐fidelity terramechanics simulation with a neural‐network‐based reduced‐order model. Gradient‐based optimization enables efficient, low‐level blade control that balances leveling quality and operation time.

Robust study design is as important on the social as it is on the ecological side of applied ecological research [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
1. The effective management of natural systems often requires resource users to change their behaviour. This has led to many applied ecologists using research tools developed by social scientists.

ERK‐Mediated Phosphorylation of YAP Defines a Noncanonical FGF Signaling Mechanism in Stem Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
With a powerful combination of in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro models, the authors highlight a novel FGF‐ERK signaling regulation of YAP at the S128 site in neural crest‐derived stem cells. This study opens exciting new directions in stem cell biology and craniofacial biology, paving the way for potential innovations in the treatment of craniofacial ...

Allocating Conservation Resources under the Endangered Species Act [PDF]

open access: yes
The necessity to develop a priority system to guide the allocation of resources to the conservation of endangered species is widely recognized. The economic theory of biodiversity has established a framework to do so, and has identified priority criteria

Consensus Formation and Change are Enhanced by Neutrality

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Neutral agents are shown to enhance both the formation and overturning of consensus in collective decision‐making. A general mathematical model and experiments with locusts and humans reveal that neutrality enables robust consensus via simple interactions and accelerates consensus change by reducing effective population size.

Survival of the Fittest and Zero Sum Games

open access: yes, 2002
Competition for available resources is natural amongst coexisting species, and the fittest contenders dominate over the rest in evolution. The dynamics of this selection is studied using a simple linear model.
