Iran supports a great share of biodiversity and floristic endemism for Fritillaria spp. (Liliaceae): A review. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Iran supports a great share of exotic and/or endemic plant genera and species. The genus Fritillaria (Liliaceae) is a precious part of this botanical richness with 19 species, of which 10 are endemic to the country.

In vivo evidence for glycyl radical insertion into a catalytically inactive variant of pyruvate formate‐lyase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Dimeric pyruvate formate‐lyase cleaves pyruvate using a radical‐based mechanism. G734 serves as a radical storage location, and the radical is transferred to the catalytic C419 residue. Mutation of the C418‐C419 pair causes loss of enzyme activity, but does not impede radical introduction onto G734. Therefore, cis‐ but not trans‐radical transfer occurs

Mapping Natura 2000 Habitat Conservation Status in a Pannonic Salt Steppe with Airborne Laser Scanning

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2015
Natura 2000 Habitat Conservation Status is currently evaluated based on fieldwork. However, this is proving to be unfeasible over large areas. The use of remote sensing is increasingly encouraged but covering the full range of ecological variables by ...

Current conservation status of Ratites

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2009
Living Ratites, which include several species or subspecies of ostriches, cassowaries, emus, rheas and kiwis, all with an important function in the ecosystem dynamics, endure the danger of extinction similarly to the extinct moas and elephant-birds.

Guidelines for assessing favourable conservation status of Natura 2000 species and habitat types in Bulgaria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This executive summary describes the methodology for assessing the favourable conservation status of N2000 habitats and species on site level in Bulgaria and gives guidelines for its application.

Evolutionary interplay between viruses and R‐loops

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses interact with specialized nucleic acid structures called R‐loops to influence host transcription, epigenetic states, latency, and immune evasion. This Perspective examines the roles of R‐loops in viral replication, integration, and silencing, and how viruses co‐opt or avoid these structures.

Ecology of the River Darter in Canadian Waters: Distribution, Relative Abundance, Life-History Traits, Diet, and Habitat Characteristics

open access: yesDiversity, 2016
The River Darter (Percina shumardi) is a native, rarely sampled fish that has been detected in relatively small numbers since the 1930s. It has a wide North American distribution, but little is known about the species biology and distribution across the ...

Species prioritization for monitoring and management in regional multiple species conservation plans. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Successful conservation plans are not solely achieved by acquiring optimally designed reserves. Ongoing monitoring and management of the biodiversity in those reserves is an equally important, but often neglected or poorly executed, part of the ...

Disruption of SETD3‐mediated histidine‐73 methylation by the BWCFF‐associated β‐actin G74S mutation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The β‐actin G74S mutation causes altered interaction of actin with SETD3, reducing histidine‐73 methylation efficiency and forming two distinct actin variants. The variable ratio of these variants across cell types and developmental stages contributes to tissue‐specific phenotypical changes. This imbalance may impair actin dynamics and mechanosensitive

Evaluating the Status of Lost, Found and Sighted Non-Native Pet Bird Species in South Africa

open access: yesDiversity
The global increase in the pet trade and ownership of pet birds has heightened the introduction of emerging invasive vertebrate species. We analyzed online databases of lost, found, and sighted non-native pet bird reports in South Africa to evaluate non ...
