Tuned Constrained Layer Damping Of A Cantilevered Plate

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1994
Summary: A damping patch is shown to behave as a constrained layer damper (CLD) for the bending modes of a tapered cantilevered plate, while behaving as a tuned damper for the sway modes. This dual nature leads to higher damping capacity for the sway modes than would be otherwise possible using a similar coverage of conventional CLD, at the expense of ...

Vibration-damping constrained-layer constructions

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1985
A constrained-layer construction comprising a stiff layer or substrate and a layer of a viscoelastic polymer which is the reaction product of (a) 25 to 75 weight percent of an acryloyl or methacryloyl derivative of at least one oligomer, said oligomer having a glass transition temperature of less than 25° C.

Constrained Layer Damping Treatments for Microstructures

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), 2001
Abstract This paper presents a bulk micro-machining process to fabricate micro-constrained layer treatments (MCLT) on a microstructure to increase its damping. MCLT consists of a silicon base beam or plate, a viscoelastic photoresist layer, and an aluminum constraining layer.

A Quantitative Evaluation of Constrained-Layer Damping

Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1967
The constrained-layer damping mechanisms on plates, beams, and tubular structures have been experimentally studied with well characterized viscoelastic materials. The Kerwin analysis [1] on plate damping has been extensively verified; important variables can now be individually controlled to achieve optimum performance.

Damping of Frames with Constrained Viscoelastic Layers

Journal of the Structural Division, 1980
The damping of a steel braced frame with a vertical layer of visco-elastic material is quantified by computing steady-state responses to harmonic lateral loadings. Viscoelastic constitutive equations are used to model all materials. It is found that the constrained viscoelastic layer significantly increases the damping of the frame while causing a ...

Augmented constrained layer damping in plates through the optimal design of a 0-3 viscoelastic composite layer

open access: yesJVC/Journal of Vibration and Control, 2018
In this work, a new 0-3 viscoelastic composite (VEC) layer is presented for augmented constrained layer damping of plate vibration. The 0-3 VEC layer comprises a rectangular array of the thin rectangular graphite-wafers embedded within the viscoelastic ...

Design of Constrained Layer Damping Topologies

Aerospace, 2003
The aim of this research is to determine the optimal topologies for viscoelastic lamina used for vibration damping. The optimization objective is to maximize the system loss factor for the first resonance frequency of a base structure. Previous optimal design studies examining viscoelastic lamina have been size or shape optimization studies, assuming a

Membrane damping by a constrained layer

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1984
An analysis of the effectiveness of a constrained layer damping treatment for in-plane vibrations of a plate is presented. The loss factor is shown to be that of an unconstrained layer treatment for frequencies below a cutoff frequency and to be substantially larger above this frequency.

Constrained layer damping with vitreous enamel

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1984
Abstract The concept of constrained layer damping with vitreous enamel has been experimentally evaluated. The constraining layer markedly broadens the free layer damping peak. The broadening has been explained on the basis of two simultaneous energy dissipation mechanisms and is related to the vitreous enamel's loss factor and viscosity.

Multilayered damping composites with damping layer/constraining layer prepared by a novel method

Composites Science and Technology, 2014
Abstract The alternating multilayered damping composites, chlorinated butyl rubber (CIIR) as damping layer and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as constraining layer, were first prepared through novel multilayered co-extrusion. The damping properties of the CIIR/PMMA multilayered damping composites were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).
