The use of constrained layer damping in vibration control
International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1989Abstract Constrained layer damping is widely used in engineering practice for minimizing unwanted vibration. This paper describes an application to an outlet guide vane whereby damping treatments are considered in terms of external constrained layers and internal fillers.

Vibration and damping analysis of cylindrical shells with a constrained damping layer
Computers & Structures, 1993Abstract The natural frequencies and loss factors in cylindrical shells with a constrained viscoelastic layer between two isotropic, elastic facings are studied using the finite element method. The finite element is developed based on a discrete layer theory assuming variation of inplane displacements across the thickness and a constant transverse ...

Extensional Effects in Constrained Viscoelastic Layer Damping
Aeronautical Quarterly, 1974SummaryThe vibration damping in unsymmetrical, multi-layer beams is obtained by the combined effects of extensional and shear stresses in the viscoelastic layer. The shear stress distribution is not constant across such a layer, although previous work has ignored this.

Damping of floor vibrations by constrained viscoelastic layers
Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1977Formulations are presented for enhancing the serviceability of one-way floor systems subjected to dynamic loading through the use of constrained viscoelastic layers. The constrained layers are combined with the floors and the resulting systems are analyzed as sandwich structures using a double Fourier series approach. Results indicate that the damping

Analysis and Optimization of Partial Constrained Damping Layers
Aerospace, 2006Topology optimization has been used to maximize the damping performance of constrained damping layer structures with viscoelastic core [1-3]. Studies show that using nanotubes as reinforcements in polymer material might improve the damping and stiffness properties [4,5].

The prediction of the damping effectiveness of multiple constrained layer damping treatments
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1979An accurate, closed form solution is presented to the problem of determining the damping effectiveness of a damping treatment on a beam consisting of an arbitrary number of alternate viscoelastic and elastic layers. It was found that the sensitivity of the damping effectiveness to temperature variations may be controlled by using dissimilar ...

Optimum design of constrained layer damping panels
Materials & Design, 1989Abstract Consideration is given to the design of constrained layer damping panels suitable for use in noise reduced diesel engine applications. It is shown that damping can be increased by reducing the thickness of the viscoelastic middle layer, reducing temperature or increasing the frequency.

An experimental comparison of piezoelectric and constrained layer damping
Smart Materials and Structures, 1996A qualitative comparison between a piezoelectric vibration absorber and a constrained layer damping treatment is presented. Piezoelectric materials convert mechanical strains into electrical charge. Dissipation of the charge results in attenuation of vibration. The damping is concentrated to a single mode by constructing a piezoelectric absorber.

Active Constrained Layer Damping of Seismic Excitations
Volume 3C: 15th Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise — Vibration Control, Analysis, and Identification, 1995Abstract This paper aims at demonstrating the feasibility of Active Constrained Layer Dampers (ACLD) as an effective means for damping out seismic-induced vibrations of structures. The ACLD concept is motivated by the destructive effects that seismic excitations have on most of the uncontrolled structures.

ROBUST CONTROL OF ACTIVE CONSTRAINED LAYER DAMPING
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1998Abstract ConventionalPassiveConstrainedLayerDamping (PCLD) treatments with visco-elastic cores are provided with built-in sensing and actuation capabilities to actively control and enhance their vibration damping characteristics. The control gains of the resultingActiveConstrainedLayerDamping (ACLD) treatments are selected, in this paper, for fully ...
