High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Optimization of the Production of Rubber Compounds Using Mathematical Models

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Rubber compounds were mixed in a batch internal mixer, and symbolic regression was used to derive mathematical models linking recipe and process parameters to ram path, torque, and mixing quality (incorporation, dispersion, distribution). Subsequent optimization with evolutionary algorithms identified operating conditions that reduce specific energy ...

Workflow for Design of Experiments‐Based Modeling of Species Transport and Growth Kinetics in GaN Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel workflow for investigating hydride vapor phase epitaxy for GaN bulk crystal growth is proposed. It combines Design of experiments (DoE) with physical simulations of mass transport and crystal growth kinetics, serving as an intermediate step between DoE and experiments.

Soft Mechanical‐Electrical Logic Using Liquid Metal‐Filled 3D‐Printed Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present 3D‐printed soft mechanical–electrical logic elements that use liquid metal–filled silicone tubes actuated by thermoplastic polyurethane/polylactic acid (TPU/PLA) architectures to produce Boolean operations. Complementary normally open and normally closed unit cells perform repeatable binary transitions and can be combined into more complex ...

Constructive Order Theory

MLQ, 2001
An upper bound \(s\) of a subset \(Y\) of a poset \(P\) is called a constructive supremum of \(Y\) if there exists a function \(\psi: P\to Y\) such that \(s\leq x\Leftrightarrow \psi(x)\leq x\) for all \(x\in P\). It is proved that the axiom of choice is equivalent to the postulate that every supremum is constructive, and also to the hypothesis that ...

A Personalized Theory of Theory Construction

Personality and Social Psychology Review, 2004
This article describes my personal approach to theory construction. I liken the construction of a theory to the solution of a mathematical puzzle in which the answer is not in the back of the book. I touch on (a) the development of a theoretical perspective, (b) the identification of a specific problem, and (c) the development of a theory to address ...

Constructive Many-Body Theory

Reviews in Mathematical Physics, 1994
We review the rôle played by renormalization, particle-number symmetry breaking, Goldstone bosons and the renormalization group in a mathematically rigorous construction of many-Fermion models at temperature zero.

THE CONSTRUCTIVE THEORY OF INVARIANTS

Mathematics of the USSR-Izvestiya, 1982
In this paper we find an explicit upper bound on the number of elements of a minimal homogeneous system of generators of the algebra of invariants of an arbitrary connected semisimple linear group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We also show that the approach to the solution of this problem proposed by Dieudonn?
