A Dynamic Model for the Normal Impact of Fly Ash Particle with a Planar Surface

open access: yesEnergies, 2013
The rebound behavior of fly ash particles normally impacting a planar surface is investigated by using a dynamic model. The three forms of soft sphere physical model are obtained using static/quasi-static contact mechanics and energy dissipation theory ...

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Partial slip contact between a rigid punch with an arbitrary tip-shape and an elastic graded solid with a finite thickness

open access: yes, 2013
In contrast to the case of a graded half-space, a nonlinear plane strain partial slip model between a rigid punch with an arbitrary tip-shape and a finite graded solid is investigated.

Carboxylic‐Acid Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube‐Alkane‐Based Resistive Temperature Sensor for Cold Chain Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a reversible temperature sensor with high switching ratio, ∼103. The device is fabricated using PET‐ITO and carbon nanotube dispersions in alkane. Considering its application in cold chain logistics, a proof‐of‐concept with LED is showcased. Thus, a temperature drop below the threshold temperature (crystallization temperature of the

Contact mechanics, friction and adhesion with application to quasicrystals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We discuss the origin of friction and adhesion between hard solids such as quasicrystals. We emphasize the fundamental role of surface roughness in many contact mechanics problems, in particular for friction and adhesion between solid bodies.

Planar Solid‐State Nanopores Toward Scalable Nanofluidic Integration Based on CMOS Technology

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present a scalable silicon‐based fabrication strategy for planar solid‐state nanopores to enable their integration with complex nanofluidic systems. Prototype devices demonstrate normal voltage‐current characteristics, good noise performance, and appreciable streaming currents. Our CMOS‐compatible fabrication process offers precise geometric control

Biomechanical modelling of cancer: Agent‐based force‐based models of solid tumours within the context of the tumour microenvironment

open access: yesComputational and Systems Oncology, 2021
Once cancer is initiated, with normal cells mutated into malignant ones, a solid tumour grows, develops and spreads within its microenvironment invading the local tissue; the disease progresses and the cancer cells migrate around the body leading to ...

Multiscale Structural Mechanics of Rotary Shaft Seals: Numerical Studies and Visual Experiments

open access: yesLubricants, 2023
Although rotary shaft seals have been used successfully in many industrial applications for decades, their tribological behavior is still not completely understood.

On the Lightweight Potential of Laser Additive Manufactured NiTi Triply Periodic Minimal Sheet Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the lightweight potential of laser additive‐manufactured NiTi triply periodic minimal surface sheet lattices. It systematically investigates the effects of relative density and unit cell size on surface quality, deformation recovery, compression behavior, and energy absorption.

Flexural contact in MEMS stiction

open access: yes, 2012
Adhesive force between two solid surfaces can lead to stiction failure of the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) device. The competition between the adhesive force and the beam restoring force determines whether the stiction occurs or not.
