A Cyclical Approach to Continuum Modeling: A Conceptual Model of Diabetic Foot Care
“Cascade” or “continuum” models have been developed for a number of diseases and conditions. These models define the desired, successive steps in care for that disease or condition and depict the proportion of the population that has completed each step.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Continuum robots have become a research focus because of their wide range of applications. However, because of the complexity of the mathematical models and the modeling inaccuracies of the continuum robot, the development of an effective control method ...

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Analysis of an energy-based atomistic/continuum approximation of a vacancy in the 2D triangular lattice [PDF]
We present an a priori error analysis of a practical energy based atomistic/continuum coupling method (A. V. Shapeev, Multiscale Model. Simul., 9(3):905-932, 2011) in two dimensions, for finite-range pair-potential interactions, in the presence of ...

Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Noncooperative oligopoly in markets with a continuum of traders [PDF]
In this paper, we study three prototypical models of noncooperative oligopoly in markets with a continuum of traders : the model of Cournot-Walras equilibrium of Codognato and Gabszewicz (1991), the model of Cournot-Nash equilibrium of Lloyd S.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Longitudinal elastic nonlinearity of compositematerial
It is known that the initial waviness of the fiber affects the stiffness characteristics and strength of the polymer composite material. The article presents a continuum model taking into account the nonlinearity of the longitudinal stiffness of the ...
