Crystals and quasicrystals: A continuum model [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications in Mathematical Physics, 1986
We construct the first model of particles in the plane with completely symmetric, short range, two body interactions which has quasiperiodic, but no periodic, ground states.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Continuum modelling of electrorheological fluids

open access: yesElectrorheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions, 2002
A thermodynamical continuum modelling is proposed for electrorheological fluids. This theormodynamical approach tries to describe the response of an electrorheological fluid in the solid phase (which means with an applied adequate electric field) under mechanical solicitations. Thermodynamic formulations distinguish the contributions due to reversible

Identification of a Shiga toxin A‐derived peptide internalized into Gb3 receptor‐bearing cells via interaction with the Shiga toxin B subunit

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The process of internalization of the Shiga toxin A subunit via formation of a complex with the Shiga toxin B subunit, which specifically binds to the Gb3 receptor. The peptide is designed to act as a carrier of drugs into cancer cells. Here, we explored the potential of peptides derived from the catalytic A subunit of Shiga toxin (STxA) to be drug ...

Continuum modeling of crowd turbulence

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2014
With the growth in world population, the density of crowds in public places has been increasing steadily, leading to a higher incidence of crowd disasters at high densities. Recent research suggests that emergent chaotic behavior at high densities-known collectively as crowd turbulence-is to blame.

Discerning protein pools by selective staining with self‐labeling tags

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cell surface proteins have an intra‐ and extracellular pool. Combining genetic fusion to self‐labeling tags that can be addressed with small molecule fluorophores allows separating these pools. We highlight recent developments and techniques for state‐of‐the‐art interrogation of cell surface proteins in the complex tissue setting.

Precursor sticking coefficient determination from indented deposits fabricated by electron beam induced deposition

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology
A fast simulation approach for focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) numerically solves the diffusion–reaction equation (continuum model) of the precursor surface on the growing nanostructure in conjunction with a Monte Carlo simulation for ...

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Modeling for Apple-Slice Drying in Carbon Dioxide Gas

open access: yesAgriculture
In this study, a numerical model of a modified air-drying process of apple slices that considers the conjugate heat and mass transfer in the drying chamber is developed.

Stochastic continuum model for mycelium-based bio-foam

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2018
Mycelium, the root structure of fungi, grows naturally as a biodegradable filamentous material. This unique material has highly heterogeneous microstructure with pronounced spatial variability in density and exhibits strongly non-linear mechanical ...
