New records of suctorians (Ciliophora: Suctoria) as epibionts of aquatic true bugs (Hemiptera: Prosorrhyncha: Nepomorpha) from two regions: Mexico and Eastern Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Here, we provide new records of suctorians (Ciliophora: Suctoria), epibionts of aquatic true bugs (Hemiptera: Prosorrhyncha: Nepomorpha) collected in Ukraine, Belarus and Mexico.

open access: yesAnimal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity, 2012
Two urostylid ciliates, Anteholosticha pulchra (Kahl, 1932) Berger, 2003 and Metaurostylopsis struederkypkeae Shao et al., 2008, new to Korea, were collected from the Yellow Sea and the East Sea, Korea, respectively.

Ciliados (Protozoa) de sedimentos secos de una charca temporaria de la Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Temporary ponds represent special environments that are inhabited by organisms adapted to changing environmental conditions. Ciliates are able to survive complete loss of water in these transient habitats through cyst formation. Nevertheless, ciliates

Autophagic flux is required for the synthesis of triacylglycerols and ribosomal protein turnover in Chlamydomonas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Autophagy is an intracellular catabolic process that allows cells to recycle unneeded or damaged material to maintain cellular homeostasis. This highly dynamic process is characterized by the formation of double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes ...

Hydro-osmotic instabilities in active membrane tubes [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. Lett. 120, 138102 (2018), 2017
We study a membrane tube with unidirectional ion pumps driving an osmotic pressure difference. A pressure driven peristaltic instability is identified, qualitatively distinct from similar tension-driven Rayleigh type instabilities on membrane tubes.

Evolutionarily conserved sites in yeast tropomyosin function in cell polarity, transport and contractile ring formation

open access: yesBiology Open, 2015
Tropomyosin is a coiled-coil protein that binds and regulates actin filaments. The tropomyosin gene in Schizosaccharomyces pombe, cdc8, is required for formation of actin cables, contractile rings, and polar localization of actin patches.

Synchrotron radiation microtomography of brain hemisphere and spinal cord of a mouse model of multiple sclerosis revealed a correlation between capillary dilation and clinical score [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Comp. Neurol. (2019), 2018
Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disorder in which the myelin sheaths of axons are damaged by the immune response. We report here a three-dimensional structural analysis of brain and spinal cord tissues of a mouse model of multiple sclerosis, known as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).

Active contractility in actomyosin networks [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol. 109, issue 17, pp. 6446-6451 (2012), 2012
Contractile forces are essential for many developmental processes involving cell shape change and tissue deformation. Recent experiments on reconstituted actomyosin networks, the major component of the contractile machinery, have shown that active contractility occurs above a threshold motor concentration and within a window of crosslink concentration.
