Education that integrates computer science and control engineering

42nd IEEE International Conference on Decision and Control (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37475), 2004
A strong background in both control engineering and computer science provides a student with extremely useful practical skills. This paper discusses two approaches to education: incorporating computer science into the controls curriculum, and incorporating controls into the computer science curriculum.

Research challenges in control engineering of computing systems

IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, 2009
A wide variety of software systems employ closed loops (feedback) to achieve service level objectives and to optimize resource usage. Control theory provides a systematic approach to constructing closed loop systems, and is widely used in disciplines such as mechanical and electrical engineering. This paper describes recent advances in applying control

REVERSE ENGINEERING OF COMPUTER-BASED CONTROL SYSTEMS

International Journal of Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, 1996
This article presents a process for the reengineering of computer-based control systems, and describes tools that automate portions of the process. The intermediate representation (IR) for capturing features of computer-based systems during reverse engineering is presented.

A computational approach for decentralized control of turbine engines

49th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), 2010
We propose a heuristic approach to approximately compute the optimal decentralized control for linear systems. The method exploits the notion of quadratic invariance, which characterizes a class of convex problems in decentralized control design, and extends the application to general unstructured models.

Digital Computer and Control Engineering

Physics Bulletin, 1961
By R. S. Ledley London: McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. Ltd. Pp. xxiv + 835. Price 112s. 6d. This book claims to be the most comprehensive textbook so far published on the subject and this is a claim that is justified. The title may be misleading as there is by far more attention given directly to the computer aspect than there is to control engineering.

A computer-controlled engine test cell for engineering experiments

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1973
A computer-controlled engine test cell was developed for conducting complex transient experiments with automotive engines. The test cell uses a minicomputer with a 16 000-word 16-b core memory to perform data acquisition and closed-loop control of the engine and dynamometer.

Mixed models of computation in the design of automotive engine control

Proceedings of the 40th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. No.01CH37228), 2002
In this paper we discuss issues involved in system level design of complex embedded systems, we focus on automotive engine and power-train control applications. We briefly illustrate the problem of capturing a complicated plant and of designing control laws that satisfy multiple requirements in different regions of operation.
