Chromospheric activity catalogue of 4454 cool stars: Questioning the active branch of stellar activity cycles

open access: yes, 2018
Context. Chromospheric activity monitoring of a wide range of cool stars can provide valuable information on stellar magnetic activity and its dependence on fundamental stellar parameters such as effective temperature and rotation. Aims.

APOBEC3 activity and DNA polymerase‐ε deficiency are associated with distinct IDH1 R132 hotspot mutations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutations are highly recurrent in multiple human cancer types, including cholangiocarcinoma and glioma. IDH1 R132C is the most common IDH1 mutation in cholangiocarcinoma and likely arises from APOBEC3A‐ or APOBEC3B‐mediated deamination.

Evaluation of astrophysically useful parameters for strontium monohydride and deuteride [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2006
The Franck-Condon factors and r-centroids which are very closely related to transition probabilities, have been evaluated by the more reliable numerical integration procedure for the band systems B2Σ-X2Σ, C2Σ-X2Σ and F2Σ-X2Σ of astrophysical molecules ...

The cooling neutron star in 3C 58 [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2002
The upper limit of the effective surface temperature of the neutron star (NS) PSR J0205+6449 in the supernova remnant 3C 58 obtained recently by Slane et al. (2002) is analyzed using a modern theory of NS cooling (Kaminker et al. 2002). The observational limit can be explained by cooling of a superfluid NS with the core composed of neutrons, protons ...

Temperatures and radii of low mass dwarfs inferred from NIR spectra

open access: yes, 2014
<p>We present a new empirical calibration for the radii, temperatures, and luminosities of cool dwarf stars. Our calibration, based on stars with bolometric fluxes and interferometric radii, uses the EWs of atomic features in moderate resolution H ...

Extracellular matrix remodeling and immune reprogramming drive residual tumor progression of liver cancer after incomplete microwave ablation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Incomplete microwave ablation (iMWA) of liver cancer triggers a biphasic progression in residual tumors. At Day 3, the microenvironment is characterized by acute inflammatory responses and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. By Day 14, a profound shift occurs toward oncogenic signal transduction and immunosuppression, marked by macrophage ...

Too Cool at School - Understanding Cool Teenagers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Cool can be thought about on three levels; the having of cool things, the doing of cool stuff and the being of cool. Whilst there is some understanding of cool products, the concept, of being cool is much more elusive to designers and developers of ...

Influence of surface stressing on stellar coronae and winds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
STFC funding has supported this research. The large-scale field of the Sun is well represented by its lowest energy (or potential) state. Recent observations, by comparison, reveal that many solar-type stars show large-scale surface magnetic fields that ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Tidal Amplitudes in the Magellanic Cloud Population of Heartbeat Stars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Eccentric ellipsoidal variable (EEV) or “heartbeat” variable stars are stars whose light curves show pulses once per orbit due to ellipsoidal distortions from strong tides at periapse and other proximity effects like irradiation.
