The essential roles of metal ions in insect homeostasis and physiology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Metal ions play distinct roles in living organisms, including insects. Some, like sodium and potassium, are central players in osmoregulation and ‘blood and guts’ transport physiology, and have been implicated in cold adaptation.

Copper Metabolism. XII. Influence of Manganese on Metabolism of Copper.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1954
Summary1. Administration of large amounts of manganese to rats was associated with an increase in the concentration of copper in plasma and brain, a decrease in the urinary excretion of copper, a decrease in the concentration of copper in the kidneys, no alteration in the concentration of copper in the liver, and microcytic, hypochromic anemia.

Paradoxical roles of antioxidant enzymes:Basic mechanisms and health implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are generated from aerobic metabolism, as a result of accidental electron leakage as well as regulated enzymatic processes.

Insights into molecular mechanisms of disease in Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation; unifying theories. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a group of disorders characterised by dystonia, parkinsonism and spasticity. Iron accumulates in the basal ganglia and may be accompanied by Lewy bodies, axonal swellings and hyperphosphorylated ...

Influence of Silver Nanoparticles on the Growth of Ascitic and Solid Ehrlich Adenocarcinoma: Focus on Copper Metabolism

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2023
The link between copper metabolism and tumor progression motivated us to use copper chelators for suppression of tumor growth. We assume that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be used for lowering bioavailable copper.

Effects of Copper and/or Cholesterol Overload on Mitochondrial Function in a Rat Model of Incipient Neurodegeneration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Copper (Cu) and cholesterol (Cho) are both associated with neurodegenerative illnesses in humans and animals models. We studied the effect in Wistar rats of oral supplementation with trace amounts of Cu (3 ppm) and/or Cho (2%) in drinking water for 2 ...

Copper metabolism and cuproptosis in human malignancies: Unraveling the complex interplay for therapeutic insights

open access: yesHeliyon
Copper, a vital trace element, orchestrates diverse cellular processes ranging from energy production to antioxidant defense and angiogenesis. Copper metabolism and cuproptosis are closely linked in the context of human diseases, with a particular focus ...

The pseudosclerotic form (“wing beating tremor”) of Wilson’s disease [PDF]

open access: yesRomanian Journal of Neurology, 2015
Wilson disease is a rare monogenic, autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism, leading to progressive accumulation of copper in different organs, essentially in the liver, brain and cornea. We report a case of a 25 years old man, Caucasian, with “

Abnormal Copper Homeostasis: Mechanisms and Roles in Neurodegeneration

open access: yesToxics, 2014
As a cofactor of proteins and enzymes involved in critical molecular pathways in mammals and low eukaryotes, copper is a transition metal essential for life.

Nanotechnology connecting copper metabolism and tumor therapy

open access: yesMedComm – Biomaterials and Applications, 2023
Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element in the human body that is involved in the formation of several natural enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and cyclooxygenase.
