Polarization optics of liquid-core optical fibers
Applied Optics, 1977Whereas straight liquid-core optical fibers have the capability of transporting linearly polarized light with any incident polarization angle, bent fibers exhibit form birefringence with the principal axes fixed to the plane of curvature. The effect of this curvature-dependent birefringence can be compensated by either periodically altering the plane of

Optical Fibers With a Finite Metallic Core
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2009Optical step index fibers can be produced that include a thin metal wire in the centre of the core. Such fibers are particularly interesting with respect to their guiding properties. With the goal to theoretically analyse their modes, we summarize three analytic solutions for dielectric media containing a thin metallic wire.

Large-core, broadband optical fiber
Optics Letters, 1977A broadband optical fiber with larger core diameter than that of a conventional single-mode fiber is proposed. By appropriately choosing normalized frequency v = 4.6 and core profile parameter alpha = 4.5, a core diameter as large as 16.3 microm with relative index difference Delta = 0.3% at the 1.25-microm wavelength is attainable.

Twin-core optical fiber with large core ellipticity
Applied Optics, 1991The first (we believe) twin-core optical fiber with large core ellipticity has been fabricated, and its significant polarization dependent coupling properties have been demonstrated.
