Demography and disorders of the French Bulldog population under primary veterinary care in the UK in 2013 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Despite its Gallic name, the French Bulldog is a breed of both British and French origin that was first recognised by The Kennel Club in 1906. The French Bulldog has demonstrated recent rapid rises in Kennel Club registrations and is now (2017)

Substrate Stress Relaxation Regulates Cell‐Mediated Assembly of Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Silicone‐based viscoelastic substrates with tunable stress relaxation reveal how matrix mechanics regulates cellular mechanosensing and cell‐mediated matrix remodelling in the stiff regime. High stress relaxation promotes assembly of fibronectin fibril‐like structures, increased nuclear localization of YAP and formation of β1 integrin‐enriched ...

Mendelian randomization analysis reveals a causal relationship between preterm birth and myopia risk

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics
BackgroundPreterm birth has been associated with an increased risk of myopia, but the causal relationship between these two factors remains unclear. Traditional epidemiological studies are limited by confounding factors and reverse causality.

Towards High‐Acuity Vision Restoration: Hybrid Retinal Prosthesis Composed of a High‐Density Multielectrode Array Integrated With Glutamatergic Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a novel Hybrid Retinal Implant (HRI), composed of a high‐density electrode array integrated with glutamatergic neurons to overcome key limitations of current retinal prostheses. The significant reduction of activation threshold and of electrode cross‐talk yields in an improved spatial resolution.

Matrix Metalloproteinases and Glaucoma Treatment. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of proteolytic enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) components such as collagen and have important roles in multiple biological processes, including development and tissue remodeling, both in ...

Blindness incidence in Germany - A population-based study from Württemberg-Hohenzollern [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Few data on the incidence of blindness in Germany are available. We analysed causes of legal blindness for the region Württemberg-Hohenzollern (population 5.5 million) in order to help fill in this gap.

Bioinspired Design of a Wet‐Adhesive Cornea Glue Based on Recombinant Human Protein Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Natures protein‐based high performance materials e.g. elastin, silk and muscle proteins have been mimicked by a new protein‐hybrid material based on redesigned human partial sequences only, showing high wet‐adhesiveness and elasticity for biomedical applications.
