Formation and Evolution of Corotating Interaction Regions and their Three Dimensional Structure

Space Science Reviews, 1999
Corotating interaction regions are a consequence of spatial variability in the coronal expansion and solar rotation, which cause solar wind flows of different speeds to become radially aligned. Compressive interaction regions are produced where high-speed wind runs into slower plasma ahead.

Elemental abundances in corotating interaction regions at high solar latitudes

Space Science Reviews, 1995
Throughout 1993, as the Ulysses spacecraft traveled from ∼23° to ∼45° south heliolatitude, the HI-SCALE instrument on the spacecraft measured a recurrent series of enhanced particle fluxes with a recurrence period of ∼26.5 days. These particles are accelerated from a background seed population by the corotating interaction regions (CIRs) associated ...

Corotating Streams and Interaction Regions

1995
Abstract In many cases, the existence of an object is inferred from its effects long before it is demonstrated by direct observations. The existence of corotating streams was inferred from their effects on geomagnetic activity (Maunder, 1905; Chapman and Ferraro, 1929; Chapman and Bartels, 1940; Parker, 1963) long before their existence ...

Energetic Particles and Corotating Interaction Regions in the Solar Wind

Space Science Reviews, 2004
This paper reviews three important effects on energetic particles of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) in the solar wind that are formed at the leading edges of high-speed solar wind streams originating in coronal holes. A brief overview of CIRs and their important features is followed by a discussion of CIR-associated modulations in the galactic ...

Particle transport and acceleration at corotating interaction regions

Advances in Space Research, 1999
Abstract The transport and acceleration of energetic nuclei associated with corotating interaction regions is discussed with emphasis on its importance relative to global heliospheric phenomena such as anomalous cosmic rays, the distant heliosphere, and propagation to high latitudes. We will discuss aspects of particle acceleration at the forward and

Muon and neutron observations in connection with the corotating interaction regions

Advances in Space Research, 2007
Abstract Ground cosmic ray observations are used for studying several kinds of interplanetary structures. The cosmic ray data has different responses to each kind of interplanetary structure. This article has as objective to study cosmic ray muon and neutron signatures due to the passage of corotating interaction region (CIR) in the interplanetary ...

Acceleration in energetics ions (∼1MeV) in corotating interaction regions

Advances in Space Research, 1998
Abstract We have correlated the ∼1 MeV proton intensity ( J ) measured at corotating reverse shocks detected by Ulysses near the ecliptic plane and in the southern hemisphere with the shock strength and shock normal angle. We find that J is essentially independent of the shock strength below 29°S, whereas between 29° and 41°S J showed a good ...

Shock acceleration of energetic particles in corotating interaction regions

Advances in Space Research, 1981
Abstract A simple shock model for the acceleration of energetic particles in corotating interaction regions (CIR) in the solar wind is presented. Particles are accelerated at the forward and reverse shocks which bound the CIR by being compressed between the shock fronts and magnetic irregularities upstream from the shocks, or by being compressed ...

Solar wind corotating interaction regions: The third dimension

Reviews of Geophysics, 1995
A new dimension has recently been added to our understanding of solar wind structure ‐ the dimension out of the solar equatorial plane. Measurements made by the Ulysses space probe at high heliographic latitudes and powerful new 3‐dimensional numerical simulations have revealed that solar wind corotating interaction regions (CIRs) tend to be tilted ...
