Cortical development and focal cortical dysplasia

Epileptic Disorders, 2003
A brief survey of cortical development is presented, focusing on neuronal migration and its alterations. Corticogenesis is achieved through ordered temporospatial steps, via the formation of transient structures, and successive waves of cell proliferation and migration (followed by cell differentiation and maturation), and apoptotic cell death.

Malformations of Cortical Development

Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRI, 2011
The advent of high resolution MRI techniques has revolutionized the imaging of cortical malformations. Today, specific gene defects have been identified to be responsible for several of the developmental cortical malformations. In this article we have discussed the developmental cortical malformations under stages of proliferation, migration and ...

Malformations of cortical development

Neuroimaging Clinics of North America, 2004
Malformations of cortical development are an important cause of developmental delay and epilepsy. Proper identification of these malformations can greatly help in accurately counseling affected families and, in some cases, in the treatment of the epilepsy. Modem neuroimaging is an important tool in the diagnosis of these malformations.

Focal cortical resection in malformations of cortical development

Epileptic Disorders, 2003
ABSTRACT Malformations of cortical development may be associated with drug‐resistant partial epilepsy suitable for surgical therapy. From the anatomopathological point of view, this categorisation has been used in reference to a wide range of alterations of the cortical mantle.

Cortical reorganization in malformations of cortical development

Neurology, 2004
The evaluation for epilepsy surgery of patients with malformations of cortical development (MCDs) in areas of clinically important cerebral function is a challenge because of the unpredictable localization of critical sensory, motor, and cognitive function. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) source localization of evoked fields can address whether functional

Disorders of cortical development

Current Opinion in Neurology, 2000
It is only a decade since the realization (facilitated by magnetic resonance imaging) in early 1990s that disorders of cortical development occupy an important place in the aetiologic categorization of epilepsy. Since then research has demonstrated the intrinsic epileptogenicity of disorders of cortical development, their genetic bases and their ...

Neuroimaging in disorders of cortical development

Neuroimaging Clinics of North America, 2004
Malformations of cortical development are important causes of developmental delay and epilepsy. They are classified by the presumed stage during which normal development is interrupted: neuronal proliferation and differentiation, neuronal migration, and late migration/cortical organization.

The role of ARX in cortical development

European Journal of Neuroscience, 2006
AbstractThe ARX protein (encoded by the aristaless‐related homeobox gene) is a member of the paired class of homeoproteins. More precisely, it is a member of the Aristaless subclass of proteins with a glutamine residue (Q) at the critical position 50 of the homeodomain (Q50).

Neurotrophins and Cortical Development

2002
The mammalian cerebral cortex requires the proper formation of exquisitely precise circuits to function correctly. These neuronal circuits are assembled during development by the formation of synaptic connections between hundreds of thousands of differentiating neurons.

Development and evolution of cortical fields

Neuroscience Research, 2014
The neocortex is the brain structure that has been subjected to a major size expansion, in its relative size, during mammalian evolution. It arises from the cortical primordium through coordinated growth of neural progenitor cells along both the tangential and radial axes and their patterning providing spatial coordinates.
