Nitrite supplementation alleviates cerebrovascular dysfunction in chronically stressed mice, but cognitive decline remains

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study aimed to determine whether sodium nitrite supplementation prevented chronic stress‐induced cerebrovascular dysfunction and cognitive decline. We hypothesize that nitrite supplementation will prevent the oxidative environment and cerebrovascular dysfunction associated with chronic stress and maintain cognitive health.

Topical application of the cold‐mimetic l‐menthol decreases wheel running without affecting the beneficial effects of voluntary exercise in mice

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Topical application of l‐menthol, a pharmacological cold‐mimetic and agonist of the cold‐sensing receptor TRPM8 (transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8), has been shown to stimulate brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and reduce weight gain in both obese and lean male mice, without affecting energy intake.

The time course of corticosterone responses in kororā (little penguin, Eudyptula minor) : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
When birds and other vertebrates perceive a situation to be threatening the hypothalamopituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis is activated and glucocorticoid hormones are secreted from the adrenal gland.

Ouabain‐induced hypertension in rats: Mechanisms, variability and translational implications

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Ouabain‐induced hypertension is a multifactorial and condition‐dependent phenomenon involving coordinated actions across vascular, renal and central nervous system pathways. At the vascular level, ouabain inhibits Na⁺/K⁺‐ATPase, particularly the α2‐isoform, leading to elevated intracellular Ca2⁺, enhanced vasoconstriction and structural ...

Antenatal betamethasone impairs markers of cardiac development and function in near‐term lambs

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure Summary of key molecular differences in the left ventricle of near‐term lambs exposed to antenatal betamethasone, compared to saline. Pregnant ewes received two doses of either saline (Saline) or betamethasone (Betamethasone, intramuscular, 11.4 mg) given 24 h apart, before delivery at 140 days of gestation (dG, term = 150 dG).
