Taming the beast: a revised classification of Cortinariaceae based on genomic data [PDF]

open access: yesFungal Diversity, 2022
Abstract Family Cortinariaceae currently includes only one genus, Cortinarius , which is the largest Agaricales genus, with thousands of species worldwide.

Habitat Disturbance Promotes Shifts in the Abundance of Major Fungal Phyla in the Roots of a Native Orchid, Tipularia discolor. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Environ Interact
ABSTRACT Orchids are a widely distributed group of flowering plants with important roles in ecosystems around the globe. However, many species are in decline due, in part, to human‐driven changes in their habitat. It is well established that orchids are reliant on specific groups of mycorrhizal fungi for growth and reproduction and that these fungi can

Mycotoxins in Basidiomycete Mycelium and Fruiting Bodies: Implications for Eu Novel Food Assessment and Selected International Regulatory Frameworks. [PDF]

open access: yesCompr Rev Food Sci Food Saf
ABSTRACT Advances in technology have enabled the efficient and sustainable production of basidiomycete vegetative mycelium, particularly from Pleurotus species, as a novel food source. However, mycelium has yet to receive regulatory approval in many global markets, requiring a better understanding of factors affecting its safety.

Molecular and morphological investigation of Cortinarius bulliardii from Tokat (Turkey)

open access: yesJournal of New Results in Science, 2021
A macrofungi species, Cortinarius bulliardii is collected from Tokat city province during field trips in 2019. It has a smooth, finely light fibrous, brownish-red pileus, whitish to light lilac-brownish flesh, broadly ellipsoidal spores, light brown when

Endophytic and ectomycorrhizal, an overlooked dual ecological niche? Insights from natural environments and Russula species. [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytol
Summary Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EcMF) are key components of temperate ecosystems, and recent studies suggest that they can also inhabit non‐EcM plant roots as endophytes. We aimed to (1) provide new evidence of EcMF colonization of non‐EcM hosts, (2) offer direct microscopic confirmation of such endophytism and (3) assess factors influencing ...

A New High-Throughput-Screening-Assay for Photoantimicrobials Based on EUCAST Revealed Unknown Photoantimicrobials in Cortinariaceae

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest health and subsequent economic threat humanity faces. Next to massive global awareness campaigns, governments and NGOs alike stress the need for new innovative strategies to treat microbial infections.

DNA‐based fungal diversity in Madagascar and arrival of the ectomycorrhizal fungi to the island

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 5, Page 954-968, September 2023., 2023
Following the analysis of all available fungal ITS sequences from Madagascar, we report 620 fungal OTUs, 10% of which contained sequences only from our field opportunistic surveys, highlighting how much fungal diversity is yet to be discovered in the island. We provide the first molecular‐based estimates of endemism for Fungi in Madagascar.

Cortinarius subgenus Vibratiles (Agaricales), a new myxacioid taxon of global scope

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 72, Issue 4, Page 751-765, August 2023., 2023
Abstract A major fungal lineage of myxacioid taxa is centred around Cortinarius vibratilis. This lineage is shown by morphological and multigene molecular phylogenetic analyses of the nrDNA ITS and LSU, as well as rpb1 and rpb2 genes to form a well‐supported clade, here introduced as the new subgenus C. subg.

Temporal dynamics of soil fungi in a pyrodiverse dry‐sclerophyll forest

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 15, Page 4181-4198, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Fire is a major evolutionary and ecological driver that shapes biodiversity in forests. While above‐ground community responses to fire have been well‐documented, those below‐ground are much less understood. However, below‐ground communities, including fungi, play key roles in forests and facilitate the recovery of other organisms after fire ...

Variation in mycorrhizal communities and the level of mycoheterotrophy in grassland and Forest populations of Neottia ovata (Orchidaceae)

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 37, Issue 7, Page 1948-1961, July 2023., 2023
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Orchid mycorrhiza forms unique symbiotic associations between members of the Orchidaceae and multiple ecological guilds of fungi. Because orchids associate with a wide variety of fungi with different ecological functions, they represent an ideal study system to address ...
