Models of DG‐Carbon Bands in Raman Spectra: Effects of Basis Functions and Initial Values on the Uniqueness and S/N of Fits Obtained for Atmospheric Aerosol Using Automated Methods

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectra containing D/G features are fit using combinations of basis functions and initial conditions. Fits with two Lorentzian functions converged to a single optimized fit even with variation of initial peak positions. For five‐band fits, sometimes the final fit varied with initial conditions, and constraints on peak center position were ...

Robust Spectroscopic Analysis Through Image‐Based Spectral Representation and Deep Learning Techniques

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
This study addresses calibration drift in Raman spectroscopy by transforming 1D spectra into 2D spider plot images processed by pretrained convolutional neural networks. This visualization strategy effectively converts detrimental spectral wavenumber shifts into simple image rotations, allowing the deep learning model to maintain high classification ...

Increased Pediatric Head and Neck Abscesses Following the COVID‐19 Pandemic

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This study evaluated the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on pediatric head and neck abscesses at two tertiary care centers. Overall head and neck abscess incidence increased more than threefold in the post‐pandemic period compared with the pre‐pandemic period, with increases observed across all major abscess subtypes.

Do cultural taboos regulate hunting in transitioning Indigenous communities? The case of the Idu Mishmi of Northeast India

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract There is rising recognition of resource‐use rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) within wildlife conservation. Historically, sociocultural institutions ensured wildlife sustainability in many IPLC areas. However, the future viability of such institutions is uncertain as IPLCs change in response to external pressures and ...

First-order phase transitions and cosmic evolution: thermodynamic approach to generalized holographic dark energy

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields
Focusing on the description of cosmic evolution at late times, this study examines a generalized holographic dark energy (HDE) framework constructed via a polynomial expansion in the Hubble parameter, which includes contributions proportional to $$H^{2},$

Nature, nature connection, and well‐being: A review of conceptual issues and opportunities

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Nature connection plays an important role in the relationship between nature contact and well‐being, but explanations of how this occurs are sometimes ambiguous while evidence is conflicting. Philosophical tensions in the way we study nature connection make it difficult to clarify these matters: while the idea of nature connection is grounded ...

Teilhard de Chardin and the Present Dialogue between Science and Religion

open access: yesPensamiento. Revista de Investigación e Información Filosófica, 2016
We can find in Teilhard's writings many points of interest for the dialogue between science and religion. I have selected three of them: his understanding of science, matter and human evolution.

Probing Evolution of Long Gamma-Ray Burst Properties through Their Cosmic Formation History

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The astrophysics of long gamma-ray burst (LGRB) progenitors as well as possible cosmological evolution in their properties still poses many open questions.
