Mycotic Salpingitis in a Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

An adult female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) was received for postmortem examination. Necropsy revealed the presence of white to grayish nodules 2-5 mm in diameter on the serosal surface of the oviduct. Aspergillus flavus was isolated from these nodules in pure culture.

Abstract Dieldrin, purity >99% HEOD, has been given to Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) at dietary concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 ppm. Mortality and dietary intake appeared to have been only marginally affected at 10 ppm, while the higher intakes gave progressively greater effects.

Hemiagenesis of the thyroid gland in the quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

Hemiagenesis of the thyroid occurred in a closed population of Japanese quails. The unilateral gland was histologically normal, occurred most frequently in females, was heavier than individual pairs of glands and the birds showed no clinical effects. Comparative aspects are discussed.
