Morphology of the cataract in albino mutant quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
Experimental Eye Research, 1985Morphological changes in cataractous albino quail lens were studied by light microscopy. In some animals, a pin-head opacity in the lens could first be detected with the naked eye 2 months after hatching. Faint anterior or posterior cortical opacity was observed in many lenses at 3 months of age.

The acute phase response in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2001Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, from S. typhimurium) or muramyl dipeptide (MDP, N-acetylmuramyl-L-ala-isoglutamine) in Japanese quail. Doses of MDP between 0.3 and 10 mg/kg body wt. had no effect on body temperature. In contrast, doses of 1.0-22.5 mg LPS/kg body wt.

Drinking induced by cellular dehydration in the quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 19881. Drinking was induced in water-replete quail 5-10 min after intravenous injection of hypertonic NaCl (0.69 osmol/l) or sucrose (1.06 osmol/l), but hypertonic urea (2.78 osmol/l) failed to induce drinking. 2. The birds drank approximately the amount required to dilute the injected solutes to isotonicity for each given dose of NaCl or sucrose. 3.

Induction of parental behavior in Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).
Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology, 1976The Japanese quail is a precocial species, and because of its relatively rapid development, sexual maturation in about 40 days after hatching, and prolific breeding capacity, it promises to become an organism well suited for avian research. One stumbling block has been the inability to induce, with any consistency, parental behavior in laboratory ...

Steroidogenesis in ovarian cells of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1985The influence of follicular maturation on steroidogenesis and steroid metabolism by isolated Japanese quail granulosa and theca cells was examined. When stimulated with LH, granulosa cells of the largest follicle (F1) responded with a sixfold increase over unstimulated progesterone levels, whereas progesterone production in cells of F3 less than ...

The Annual Testicular Cycle of the Domestic Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
Anatomia, Histologia, Embryologia, 1997SummaryA morphometric study was conducted on the testis of the domestic quail Coturnix coturnix japonica to determine testicular kinetics. We investigated the variability along the year of testicular parameters such as seminiferous tubule diameter, germinal epithelium height and amount of meiotic figures of maturing spermatids in the seminiferous ...

Ipsilateral retinal projections in Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica
Brain Research Bulletin, 1983Ipsilateral retinal projections were investigated in Japanese quails by means of the Fink-Heimer method after retinal extirpation, and by means of direct injection of horseradish peroxidase or cobalt ion-tophoresis into the optic nerve. Ipsilateral projections were found in the nucleus lateralis anterior thalami, nucleus dorsolateralis anterior thalami

The distribution of monoamines in the hypothalamus of the Japanese quail Coturnix coturnix japonica
Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1968The distribution of monoamines in the hypothalamus of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) has been studied using a histochemical fluorescence technique. In the posterior hypothalamus catecholamine-containing nerve fibres are localised in the nucleus tuberis and nucleus hypothalamicus posterior medialis and are linked by fluorescent tracts ...
