Divergent Perceptions of Dairy Farmers on the Role of Grazing in Animal Welfare and Production
ABSTRACT The modernization of dairy production, characterized by a transition to freestall barns with automatic milking systems and increasing herd sizes, has resulted in a decline in cattle grazing. Performance in dairy cows and calves with or without cow-calf contact on pasture
Interest in dairy cow-calf contact (CCC) systems is growing, yet limited research had been focused on CCC in a pasture setting. Our study aimed to evaluate the performance of pastured dairy cows and calves with or without CCC through machine milk yield and composition, cow body condition score (BCS) and body weight (BW) decrease, and calf body weight ...

The effects of restricted nursing (RN) and the administration of a bovine appeasing substance (BAS) on days −8 and 0 in relation to weaning were evaluated. Both strategies were effective in improving the growth performance of beef calves. Regarding welfare, BAS ‐especially on day 0‐ was more effective than RN.

Roughage Feeding Patterns of Dairy Cows in a Cow-Calf Contact System with Automatic Milking
Dairy cows in contact with their calves can spend time engaging in maternal behaviors, which may affect their feeding patterns. This study aimed to evaluate the roughage feeding behavior patterns of dairy cows with minimum 12 weeks of full calf contact (FC) across the nursing (0–12 weeks in milk; WIM), gradual weaning (13–14 WIM) and post-separation ...

Food Availability Cannot Explain Dispersal and Settlement Decisions of a Grassland Bird
We test a commonly assumed explanation for animal movements—namely that food availability shapes where animals disperse to. Based on the results of four strong predictions, 3 years of data, and hundreds of individual birds, we show that food cannot explain breeding dispersal in this system, and we propose alternative explanations consistent with our ...
