Abstract In this short and popular review, we summarise some of our findings analysing the replication cycles of large DNA viruses using scanning transmission electron tomography (STEM tomography) that we applied in the laboratory of Paul Walther. It is also a tribute to a very kind and expert scientist, who recently retired.

Epidemiology and fitness effects of wood mouse herpesvirus in a natural host population [PDF]
Rodent gammaherpesviruses have become important models for understanding human herpesvirus diseases. In particular, interactions between murid herpesvirus 4 and Mus musculus (a non-natural host species) have been extensively studied under controlled ...

Re-Assembly and Analysis of an Ancient Variola Virus Genome
We report a major improvement to the assembly of published short read sequencing data from an ancient variola virus (VARV) genome by the removal of contig-capping sequencing tags and manual searches for gap-spanning reads. The new assembly, together with

Abstract In the increasingly likely event of an engineered‐virus outbreak or pandemic of catastrophic potential, managing infectious aerosols to reduce transmission will be crucial. Now is the time to start preparing our buildings, public opinion, and regulatory environments for the infectious aerosol management interventions necessary to protect the ...

Incongruencies in Vaccinia Virus Phylogenetic Trees
Over the years, as more complete poxvirus genomes have been sequenced, phylogenetic studies of these viruses have become more prevalent. In general, the results show similar relationships between the poxvirus species; however, some inconsistencies are ...

Genome-wide comparison of cowpox viruses reveals a new clade related to Variola virus. [PDF]
Zoonotic infections caused by several orthopoxviruses (OPV) like monkeypox virus or vaccinia virus have a significant impact on human health. In Europe, the number of diagnosed infections with cowpox viruses (CPXV) is increasing in animals as well as in ...

ICP34.5 is one of the most important antihost response proteins. The saRNA‐encoding HSV‐1 neurovirulence protein ICP34.5 clearly mediated the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha subunit (eIF2α) dephosphorylation and significant suppression of innate immune responses in vitro, leading to enhanced expression of the saRNA‐encoded gene.

Ovarian cancer‐derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) transfer INAVA mRNA to normal ovarian fibroblasts (NOFs). Translated INAVA protein inhibits HMGA2 phosphorylation‐dependent ubiquitylation and proteasomal degradation, promoting NOF activation.

From the animal house to the field : are there consistent individual differences in immunological profile in wild populations of field voles (Microtus agrestis)? [PDF]
Inbred mouse strains, living in simple laboratory environments far removed from nature, have been shown to vary consistently in their immune response.
