Some practical crack path examples [PDF]
It is well known that many engineering structures and components, as well as consumer items, contain cracks or crack-like flaws. It is widely recognised that crack growth must be considered both in designand in the analysis of failures.

The crack propagation behavior of rock during compression involves complex mechanisms. Describing the growth behavior of a large number of cracks with conventional mechanical models is a major challenge.

Experimental study of sandstone crack propagation behavior under different seepage pressures
To study the characteristics of sandstone crack propagation under hydraulic coupling, sandstone laboratory tests were conducted under different seepage pressures and confining pressures.

A Surrogate Approach to Reveal Microstructural Mechanisms Controlling the 3D Short Crack Growth in a Ti-6Al-4V Alloy [PDF]
Microstructural features and short crack growth behavior were characterized and linked in a Ti-6Al-4V by employing X-ray micro-tomography combined with EBSD serial sectioning.

Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

The effect of weld residual stresses and their re-distribution with crack growth during fatigue under constant amplitude loading [PDF]
In this work the evolution of the residual stresses in a MIG-welded 2024-T3 aluminium alloy M(T) specimen during in situ fatigue crack growth at constant load amplitude has been measured with neutron diffraction.

Fatigue failure analysis of pin-loaded lugs [PDF]
In the present paper, mathematical models are proposed in order to analyze the strength of pinloaded lugs with semi-elliptical crack and through-the-thickness crack.

Weld defects such as porosity, inclusion, burn-through, and lack of penetration are difficult to detect and control effectively in an orthotropic steel deck (OSD), which will be a fatigue crack initiation site and lead to several fatigue cracking.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
