Crack opening displacement measurements at elevated temperatures
Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments, 1970Equipment has been developed for assessing the fracture toughness properties of steels at temperatures up to 700?C. This is achieved by the direct measurement of the opening of the faces of a pre-existing notch in fatigue cracked specimens under constant load conditions.

Fatigue crack propagation under programmed loads and crack tip opening displacements
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1970Abstract A fatigue crack propagation model relating fatigue crack growth rates to crack tip opening displacements is evaluated in the case of two tests under programmed loads with a peak overload every 200 cycles. It is shown that the relative amount of crack extension produced by different load amplitudes can be related to the relative crack tip ...

Critical Crack-Tip Opening Displacement of SCLC
2018The aim of this study is to consider the effects of water/binder ratio on fracture behavior of self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLC). To do so, four mixes with constant nominal size of aggregate (d a = 12.5 mm) have been prepared such that the weight of aggregate and portion of coarse aggregate to fine aggregate were designed to be constant ...

Crack-Opening Displacement of Surface Cracks in Pipeline Steel Plates
1983A series of 30.4 by 10 by 1.6-cm tensile panels of an API SLX-70 pipeline steel with different surface crack lengths and depths were tested. Measured crack-mouth-opening displacements (CMOD) were compared with the predictions from linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) plus the modified critical crack-opening displacement (COD) model.

Relationships between crack opening displacement, alloy variables, and crack detection sensitivity
Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, 1982Alloy grain size is known to influence both the propagation path and the closure stress of surface fatigue cracks in many alloys. The general trend is for the path to be more tortuous and the closure stress to be larger, the larger the grain size. By use of Ti Al-4V and Al 7075-T6, the effects of grain size on the nondestructive detection of surface ...

Overstraining effects on the crack-opening displacement of microstructurally short cracks
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2005The influence of different overstraining events on the crack-opening displacement of microstructurally short cracks in polycrystalline nickel was investigated. Both symmetric and asymmetric overstraining experiments were carried out and the influence of increasing overstraining ratio and number of overstraining cycles was analysed.

Crack Opening Displacement Model for Through-Wall Axial Cracks in Cylinders
Volume 6A: Materials and Fabrication, 2013For piping systems, leak-before-break calculations rely on estimates of leak rates when postulated cracks grow through the pipe wall. The leak rate, in turn, depends on the crack opening dimensions. Previous work on crack opening displacement (COD) includes recent advances in COD estimates for circumferentially-oriented cracks in cylinders under ...

Post-Yield Crack Opening Displacement of Surface Cracks in Steel Weldments
1984Crack-mouth-opening displacements (CMOD) of surface cracks are measured as functions of stress and strain in tensile panels of API 5LX-70 steel plates and welded pipe segments. The experimental results are compared with analytical predictions. For CMOD versus stress, a previously developed model provides good agreement between experiment and analysis ...

Crack-tip blunting and crack-opening displacement under large-scale yielding
Metal Science, 1976AbstractThe recrystallization method, a newly developed technique for measuring plastic strain, makes it possible to observe directly the intense strain region near the crack tip. The shape of this zone and the plastic strain distribution obtained by this method are similar to the theoretical findings of Rice and Johnson.
